Because of your generosity, my students experienced a blend of creativity, responsibility, and real-world learning that they absolutely loved. Designing and painting their pots gave them a chance to express themselves, practice descriptive language, and follow multi-step directions in a fun, low-stress way. Planting and caring for their succulents helped them learn about plant care, life cycles, and responsibility - plus they were so proud to see something they nurtured start to grow. You helped create an after-school environment where students felt safe to try new things, collaborate, and let their personalities shine.\r\n\r\nThis project meant even more because so many of my students are multilingual learners. Activities like this give them meaningful language practice while also boosting their confidence and sense of belonging. Watching them encourage each other, describe their designs, and take ownership of their plants was such a special experience. They walked away with something they created with their own hands, and that physical reminder of their hard work and creativity truly matters.","fullyFundedDate":1746785761372,"projectUrl":"project/blooming-futures-cultivating-creativity/9047779/","projectTitle":"Blooming Futures: Cultivating Creativity and Growth in Our ELL Club","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Nikolaenko","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7631233_orig.jpg?crop=3024,3024,x0,y504&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1604256074029","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7631233"},{"teacherId":7631233,"projectId":9236957,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for supporting our classroom! With these new Scholastic News issues, my students are getting to practice so many essential reading skills: main idea, text features, vocabulary in context, and using evidence to support their thinking. Each issue also lets us work on nonfiction comprehension in a way that feels fun instead of intimidating. Reading in my classroom is a mix of partner reading, small-group discussions, annotating with highlighters, and lots of \"turn and talk\" moments where students get to share their thinking. It's been amazing watching them connect what we're learning in science and social studies to what they're reading in the articles.\r\n\r\nSome of my students, especially my English Language Learners, have really fallen in love with these texts. I love that I can look up the Spanish videos online and that I have digital access to translated text so that all students feel included in what we are learning about. A few weeks ago, we read the issue about sugar in cereals, and we had a whole class talk about nutrition- it sparked some awesome conversations! The beauty of these graphic novels is that their illustrated nature make the stories more accessible for English language learners, making language fluency one step closer. These are stories that all of our students, language learners and English speakers alike, rarely get access to outside of the provision of libraries and I want you to know: your gift has opened doors for them. \r\n\r\nThis library services a financially disadvantaged community, and having a diverse, engaging selection of graphic novels makes an incredible difference. Here's how each of these resources is being used:\r\n\r\n1. Laminators & Pouches – Empowering Learning with Durability & Interactivity\r\nWe use laminators and pouches to create adapted books that are specially designed to enhance engagement and accessibility for our students. By laminating pages, we ensure that the books are durable and can withstand repeated use—crucial for children who rely on sensory materials or tactile interaction. These books often feature larger print, textures, movable parts, or interactive elements that help students learn through touch and visual engagement, making education both accessible and enjoyable.\r\n\r\n2. Books – Encouraging Literacy & Emotional Growth\r\nThe specialized books we've been able to provide are more than just reading materials; they serve as tools for social-emotional development and literacy building. With your help, we're able to offer books that teach valuable life skills, social scenarios, and emotional awareness. These resources empower our students to engage with stories, develop a greater understanding of the world around them, and enhance their communication skills in a supportive and inclusive way.\r\n\r\n3. Pretend Play Toys – Building Social and Cognitive Skills\r\nIncorporating pretend play toys into our classrooms has had a transformative effect on our students. These toys encourage imaginative play and are an excellent way to develop important cognitive and social skills such as communication, empathy, and problem-solving. By acting out real-life scenarios, children are not only able to express themselves more effectively, but they also practice essential social interactions in a fun, hands-on environment.\r\n\r\nThe Impact of Your Contribution:\r\nYour donation is directly supporting the creation of these crucial educational tools, which are helping students with disabilities reach their full potential. The combination of adapted books and pretend play toys is fostering independence, building communication skills, and encouraging emotional development—all of which are foundational for personal growth and success.\r\n\r\nWe cannot thank you enough for your commitment to making a lasting difference. With your generosity, we are able to offer a rich, inclusive learning environment that nurtures every child's potential and allows them to thrive.","fullyFundedDate":1745847054176,"projectUrl":"project/using-visuals-and-hands-on-activities-fo/9076735/","projectTitle":"Using Visuals and Hands-On Activities for Speech","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Peters","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9432995_orig.jpg?crop=3024,3024,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1737320048889","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9432995"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_83347","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":607,"numTeachers":38,"percentFrplEligible":75,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":11,"percentWhite":40,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":36,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"16.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":71.3,"schoolId":83347,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Fairwood Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Fairwood Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/ohio/hamilton-city-school-district/fairwood-elementary-school/83347"}
