The new dramatic play items have brought our reading units to life, and with each new unit, they are excited to find out what our dramatic play will turn into! Their engagement with lessons are higher, their comprehension has expanded, and I see kids everyday learning in an environment best adapted to their needs (play!)\r\n\r\nWe are currently learning about plants, and it has been wonderful to see the kids acting out naturally everything they have learned and will learn through this kind of setting. They are talking about plant parts, selling (saying) specific names of plants to friends, and even practicing pollination with a bee/insect costumes.\r\n\r\nNext up, we'll be exploring Farms, Native Americans, Taking Care of our Earth, and more CKLA themes. I cannot wait to use more of the materials like the teepee, the \"buffalo\" rug, costumes, construction blocks/straws, and more within these set ups. The students that I work with are half way through third grade and still reading, in the areas of decoding and fluency, at the kindergarten level. We are still focusing on rate and decoding; I daily writing, site word, and explicit phonics instruction. Until this areas come together, my students cannot make necessary steps towards grade level comprehension. The supplies purchased through donations help to promote comfort and organization during this times.\r\n\r\nThere is research that supports the idea that children learn from people they believe care about them. I strive to make my classroom learning environment a homelike place. The EyeWord Curriculum is now a favorite during our literacy block, helping students master sight words through fun games like a \"sight word treasure hunt.\" The LCD tablets are perfect for practicing handwriting and spelling, and students love the magic of erasing with just a button. The multisensory pencils have made writing more comfortable and fun, especially for my beginner writers, while the sweeper has turned cleanup time into a teamwork activity after messy projects.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials arrived, the students were thrilled! The LCD tablets especially brought lots of \"oohs and ahhs,\" and the sight word games sparked friendly competition.\r\n\r\nNext, we're focusing on mastering new sight words within only a minute (we are currently at 21!) with the EyeWord games and using the multisensory pencils to improve handwriting during writing practice. The LCD tablets will also help us start simple word/phrase/sentence writing.
