When I received notification that this project was funded, I was both surprised and elated. I had never used Donors Choose before, per encouragement from our principal, I thought I would give it a try.\r\n\r\nEastmoor Academy has wonderful staff and students, yet the resources are not always there to implement the many initiatives to support learning beyond the typical classroom model. Through your giving we were able to do a schoolwide initiative that triggered a sense of camaraderie throughout the building. The theme for the door decorating contest was Lift Every Voice amplifying Black voices—past, present, and future—and celebrating the impact of Black expression, resilience, creativity, and leadership. The students were genuinely excited and engaged in coming up with ideas to create their doors.\r\n\r\nOur school staff were given a rubric describing how the doors would be judged. Classes were given a class period to brainstorm ideas and then 2 days to work on their door. From the pictures I have shared you can see students working diligently to put their ideas together. The doors remained decorated for the entire month of February, and the winners were given a pizza party to celebrate their hard work.\r\n\r\nThere was a three-way tie. I have shared with you the winners. One door paid homage to Billie Holiday, the door included a poem written by one of our students about how the song Strange Fruit still resonates today and a QR code which, when scanned, played the song for people to hear. Another door highlighted black artists and even had push button which played messages and music. The final door was an interpretation of the Black American Heritage Flag incorporated with famous black figures throughout the generations.\r\n\r\nAs you can see, students took their time and engaged in this project. There was a healthy spirit of effort and competition throughout the classrooms. It was wonderful to see students taking ownership of their doors. This could not have been accomplished without your kind donation. Your kindness made a visible difference in our school, and I want to share how your donation has impacted our students.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials arrived—boxes filled with snacks, notebooks, pencils, folders, notebooks and writing utensils—my students' faces lit up with surprise and gratitude. Several students asked, \"Is this really for us?\" It was a powerful moment of joy and relief for children who often go without the basic things many take for granted. \r\n\r\nWe immediately organized the items so students could \"shop\" for what they needed, no questions asked. News spread and our after school athletes came in for some high protein, nutritious snacks prior to their after school extracurricular activities. \r\n\r\nLooking ahead, our student council is trying to come up with a plan to establish a Warrior Closet so that students who are in need may be able to get personal hygiene products, academic supplies, and nutritious snacks like the items provided to students via Donors Choose, and any additional identified needs our students need to improve their high school experience before, during, and after the academic school day, while improving their academic achievement and success. We will identify the needs based on this project and propose solutions. Having the right tools and basic necessities in place allows our students to dream bigger and think deeper.\r\n\r\nFrom the bottom of our hearts—thank you. Your support has planted seeds of confidence, creativity, and care in our classroom. We are incredibly grateful.","fullyFundedDate":1740675922722,"projectUrl":"project/classroom-needs-food-and-school-supplie/9076875/","projectTitle":"Classroom Needs: Food and School Supplies for Economically Disadvantaged Students","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Marrero","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9905531_orig.jpg?crop=2208,2208,x0,y95&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1737594318723","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9905531"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_84002","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":583,"numTeachers":40,"percentFrplEligible":90,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":88,"percentWhite":2,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":4,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"14.6:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":56.3,"schoolId":84002,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Eastmoor Academy on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Eastmoor Academy","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/ohio/columbus-city-school-district/eastmoor-academy/84002"}
