As a school transitioning from an elementary setting, our shelves were noticeably sparse, and students had limited choices when looking for books that felt relevant to them. These new titles are making an immediate difference by filling empty spaces and offering students more options, especially books by authors and about characters who reflect their identities, experiences, and cultures. While this project represents just a small step toward building the collection our students deserve, it is a powerful and meaningful start.\r\n\r\nWe are using the new books during book tastings and book \"speed dating\" experiences, where students sample a variety of titles and discover stories they might not have chosen on their own. These activities help students explore the growing collection in a relaxed, engaging way and make thoughtful decisions about what they want to read next. Many students are finding books that act as mirrors, while others are choosing windows and sliding glass doors that introduce them to new perspectives and experiences.\r\n\r\nBecause of this project, I am able to provide students with more choice, more representation, and more opportunities to connect with books in authentic ways. We are deeply grateful to The DonorsChoose Community for helping us begin to rebuild and reimagine our library. Your support is already benefiting students by expanding access to meaningful texts and laying the foundation for a stronger, more inclusive reading culture in our school.","fullyFundedDate":1758847010372,"projectUrl":"project/mirror-windows-sliding-glass-doors/9585107/","projectTitle":"Mirror, Windows, & Sliding Glass Doors","teacherDisplayName":"Dr. Bosley","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3826548_orig.jpg?crop=374,374,x2,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1755093211228","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mrsbosley"},{"teacherId":3826548,"projectId":9565659,"letterContent":"Because of your generosity, our school library has begun transitioning to a place where creativity, confidence, and innovation are on full display. Students immediately gravitated to the sewing machine and Cricut, eagerly exploring what they could create with tools they had never had access to before. One of my favorite moments was watching students proudly show off small pillows they designed and sewed themselves; many of which were gifted to loved ones. Seeing their excitement as they realized, \"I made this,\" has been incredibly powerful.\r\n\r\nThe reaction to the materials has been nothing short of joyful. Students were buzzing the first time they saw the machines, asking questions, sharing ideas, and helping one another problem-solve. The makerspace has become a place where students feel empowered to experiment and take creative risks. Several students have already begun planning t-shirt designs and are counting down the days until we can get a dedicated computer, allowing them to fully design and put their creative plans into action.\r\n\r\nThanks to your support, we are now looking ahead to what's next. Students are excited about the possibility of hosting a student-led maker/craft fair this spring, where they can design, create, and share their work with the larger school community using all of the makerspace tools. Many have also asked for a sewing club, inspired by their early successes, which has motivated me to pursue additional machines and supplies to meet their enthusiasm. We use them during our morning calm-down block, sensory breaks, and small-group stations. Students choose items that help them regulate, focus, or participate more comfortably in activities. It has been amazing to see how the right sensory tool can help a student settle into a task, communicate a need, or re-engage in learning.\r\nOne of my favorite moments came during our \"Feelings and Focus\" station. Students created short \"sensory strategies\" cards little guides showing which object helps them when they're feeling overwhelmed, excited, or tired. One student who typically struggles to stay at the table chose a textured fidget and proudly worked for ten straight minutes, then shared his card with the group. It was a real breakthrough and reminded me how powerful the right tools can be for building independence.\r\n\r\nTheir excitement was instant and loud—in the happiest way. Many of them ran their hands over the textures, tapped or squeezed the objects, or simply held them close. For some of my more sensory-sensitive students, there was this quiet moment of relief, like they'd finally found something that felt \"just right.\" Several students asked, \"Are these for us? Do we get to use them every day?\" The materials were an immediate hit.\r\nNext steps for our current lessons or projects:\r\nWe're now working on integrating the sensory materials into self-regulation lessons. Students will be practicing identifying their emotions, choosing an appropriate sensory support, and reflecting on how it helped. We're also building \"sensory toolkits\" that students can take to different parts of the classroom so they feel confident and supported no matter where they're working.\r\nThese resources are already shaping our routines and helping students feel safe, supported, and ready to learn. Thank you for giving them what they truly need to thrive.","fullyFundedDate":1740750191753,"projectUrl":"project/engage-focus-thrive-sensory-and-educa/9100027/","projectTitle":"Engage, Focus, Thrive: Sensory and Educational Tools for Success","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Wheaton","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9916918_orig.jpg?crop=1290,1290,x0,y348&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1739376110625","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9916918"},{"teacherId":9999510,"projectId":9256945,"letterContent":"Due to limited copy clicks in our district, having a personal printer has given me the flexibility to print lessons and activities for my classroom. The rug adds a bright, cheerful presence to our room and provides a welcoming space for collaboration and learning.\r\nThe stools are used at the teacher station during small group instruction.
