Track and Field has been one of my favorite sports since high school. It taught me a lot, not just about my teammates and myself, but rather how to push myself, to motivate others, and to work individually harder to strengthen the team.\r\n\tThe purpose of this project was to obtain tools that would invite students to try something new. This year, many school districts were put in a tough space when President Trump wanted to restrict DEI. Our district superintendent made the decision not to sign that document, which meant that part of the budget would be diminished; cuts were made across the board, and that meant even for athletics.\r\n\tThis year, I stepped out of my comfort zone to coach. In the winter, I assisted both boys' and girls' junior high school basketball. This was very demanding; 4 days a week practices and several games each week from November through February. Then I decided to have a go with Track and Field in the spring. I knew going in that I would like to be able to give as many students a way to express themselves. When asking students around the building what they thought track and field was, many would roll their eyes and say something about running...which honestly really made me grind my teeth. I asked many to come out and try the sport because it wasn't all running laps around the building, or sprints in the gym; there are opportunities to jump over hurdles and bars and into sandpits, and even throw shotputs, discuses, and even a javelin (foam of course). All of these events test your physical strength and agility, but also your mental strength; how one motivates themselves and continues to push through, even at the toughest time.\r\n\tI had a few students show up and try for the first couple weeks of the season; unfortunately, due to lack of registration our season ended rather abruptly. But on the positive side those students did try out the new items - shotput, discus, javelin, and starting blocks; and they loved getting to learn how to use them. And for these materials, I am again, very grateful. \r\n\tThese few students hopefully learned a new skill physically, but also ventured out of their own comfort zones to attempt a new activity on their own, for which you made possible. I hope to encourage more students to try track and field again in the future, because I know what an impact it had on me growing up. This has reduced time wasted looking for supplies and has created smoother transitions between lessons.One memorable moment came when students used their new organizational tools during our DBQ writing project. They were able to quickly access their documents, outlines, and notes without confusion. Several students proudly showed off how their binders were set up, saying things like, \"I finally know where everything goes!\" That sense of pride and independence has carried over into their classwork and behavior.When students first saw the materials, they were genuinely excited. They immediately started brainstorming ways to personalize their folders and storage areas, and many commented on how much easier it was to keep track of assignments.Right now, students are applying these organizational skills as we work through our American Revolution and Valley Forge DBQs. The next step is for students to maintain these systems as they take on longer writing assignments and group projects. A student commented, \"It feels like a real author's workshop in here now!\" The soft, adjustable lighting helps students stay focused without feeling overwhelmed, especially for those with sensory needs or who are learning English.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the new lights, their faces lit up just as brightly! They were amazed at how much more inviting the classroom looked. Many of them said it felt \"like a whole new classroom\" and immediately asked to read or write by the new lighting.\r\n\r\nRight now, we're using our improved space to work on DBQ essays about Valley Forge. The better lighting helps students see their materials more clearly, collaborate more effectively, and stay on task longer.
