My oldest students created a mask of self. On the inside is your true self all the complexities and more. On the outside are the many selves that we share with the world, like the student, the daughter or son and even boyfriend or girlfriend. In truth students have many faces, it sometimes depends on the situation we face. \r\n\r\nI utilized the texts, like I am Malala, to explore the challenges and discrimination especially young girls face while trying to get an education in various parts of the world. Similarly, if we look at our regional culture, colleges and universities in the southern USA have not always provided access to rural people, women and people of color. But overall students could recognize the gains the southern USA has made and appreciate the journey ahead. \r\n\r\nWe used the scholarship volume to help students apply to more scholarships and better understand how lower college debt enables students to save money and have a better future. Especially for first generation students who sometimes are faced with taking out large amounts of money to try and get ahead. \r\n\r\nWe have used the green screen to create videos in my classes and with my film-making club. Students had to demonstrate skills that they can do well and record for the class. Their prompt was to teach their peers one thing. It was so much fun. We had a student film his chickens and cook eggs and another play the accordion. Wow, such hidden talents. \r\n\r\nI'm focusing on helping students find the right field and avenue for them. For some students a trade might be the best avenue to a better life. For those students an applied associates degree might be most appropriate. While other students might want to complete an associate's degree and transfer after graduation to a four-year institution. Your materials encouraged me to better advise students on job-shadowing, internships and pre-apprenticeships. \r\n\r\nThere are many avenues toward a great future. While a future career is important, it is equally important to have balance and good relationships, nutrition and connection to community. \r\n\r\nThank you again for funding my project. I cannot thank you enough and apologize for my very late response.","fullyFundedDate":1565712950885,"projectUrl":"project/its-a-different-world-helping-diverse/4231041/","projectTitle":"It's a Different World: Helping Diverse Students Make College Plans","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Slawter","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp2579741_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1756259824780","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/2579741"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_94067","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":198,"numTeachers":9,"percentFrplEligible":77,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":65,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":32,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"22.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":93.8,"schoolId":94067,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Yadkin Early College on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Yadkin Early College","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/north-carolina/yadkin-county-schools/yadkin-early-college/94067"}
