They have helped the students in my classroom by listening to stories that include characters who have the same issues as they do. We can make real-life connections and discuss together as a class how to solve different real-life problems in first grade. This can include treating others with respect, following directions, and making new friends. We usually bring these books out during our morning meeting, first thing in the morning. Students can tell how they are feeling and bring up things that are bothering them for us to help brainstorm how to make it better. These stories can help bridge the learning.","fullyFundedDate":1593212393016,"projectUrl":"project/back-to-the-books/4976356/","projectTitle":"Back to the Books!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Keller","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6539037"},{"teacherId":3201306,"projectId":8625703,"letterContent":"As adults, we have all taken notes and highlighted while reading to improve our understanding or to focus on important information. However, we probably don't remember learning how to do it. To us as readers, it is just natural instinct, but to new readers it can be as foreign a concept as another language. They have to be taught to make notes just as they are taught how to recognize the words. The problem comes in when we don't have enough consumation resources to practice these skills. This project was designed to help with that problem.\r\n\r\nI was able to order scholastic news magazines for my students to use when working with information or non-fiction text. The arrival of the packages brought an atmosphere of excitement comparable to Christmas morning! My students were overjoyed to explore the picture books, captivated by the stunning illustrations and eager to delve into the stories.\r\nThe timing of the books could not have been better, as we recently focused on figurative language. The enthusiasm in the classroom was evident as students made connections during our read-aloud sessions. They effectively listened for and identified various literary devices such as hyperboles, similes, and metaphors. Many students even requested to revisit the books independently, demonstrating a newfound interest in reading that I am thrilled to witness.\r\nYour generosity has sparked a love for reading among my students, encouraging them to engage with books they might not have chosen on their own.
