My students were eager and engaged throughout the process, and have developed a new appreciation for North Carolina folk art, particularly the assemblage work of Ann Hobgood. \r\n\r\nWe used the resources that were provided to create assemblage art on a slime painting base, adapting the three dimensional found object work of Hobgood into a low relief assemblage sculpture. The project also provided a great opportunity for critical thinking and problem solving in a STEAM environment, as the students had to measure and adjust their slime solutions to get a thickness and texture that would be effective in creating a base for their assemblages.\r\n\r\nWhen my students saw the materials, they immediately recognized the ingredients to make slime and were very excited. They could not believe their luck in getting to make slime at school! At the end of the unit, my students wrote artist statements giving me feedback on what they liked about this project and what they would do differently next time. The approval was nearly unanimous in their responses, with several stating that this was their favorite project yet! \r\n\r\nThank you so much for your generous donation to make this project possible.","fullyFundedDate":1746785768789,"projectUrl":"project/nc-folk-art-meets-slime-assemblage/9146724/","projectTitle":"Nc Folk Art Meets Slime Assemblage","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Sale","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9937105_orig.jpg?crop=810,810,x204,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1741353091439","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/ms-sale-art-ed"},{"teacherId":10045176,"projectId":9383116,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generosity, our classroom feels like a true learning community. The new rug anchors our meeting space for mini-lessons, read-alouds, and math talks. The stand-up light and light-up tree create a calm, focused vibe during independent work and small groups, while the pencil sharpener and Expo markers keep our whiteboard practice smooth and efficient. A favorite moment: during a collaborative \"Evidence Hunt\" in ELA, teams rotated on the rug with whiteboards, using the fresh markers to cite text evidence. One quiet student volunteered to explain her group's claim to the class—she said the cozy rug area \"felt like a stage, but not scary.\"\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the materials, the room filled with excited whispers—\"Is that a tree that lights up?\" \"This looks like a real classroom now!\" They immediately asked to read on the rug during independent reading and lined up to test the new sharpener (we set a routine quickly!). The soft lighting helped our easily-distracted learners settle in, and I noticed longer stretches of sustained focus during writing.\r\n\r\nNext up, we're launching a multi-week project: \"Community Changemakers.\" Students will research a local issue, draft persuasive letters, and present solutions. The rug will be our daily briefing space; the Expo markers will support rapid prototyping of arguments and feedback rounds; the calm lighting will signal \"revision time.\" We'll culminate with a gallery walk where students share final drafts and presentation boards. Your support didn't just add supplies—it elevated our environment and the way we learn together. Thank you for investing in our students' voice, confidence, and success.","fullyFundedDate":1751406004856,"projectUrl":"project/every-voice-matters-empowering-learners/9383116/","projectTitle":"Every Voice Matters: Empowering Learners of All Abilities","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Poplin","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10045176_orig.jpg?crop=1242,1242,x0,y298&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1748470535809","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10045176"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_3655","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":347,"numTeachers":27,"percentFrplEligible":83,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":85,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":10,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"12.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_REMOTE"},"inStateSupporters":76.9,"schoolId":3655,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about East Wilkes Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"East Wilkes Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/north-carolina/wilkes-county-school-district/east-wilkes-middle-school/3655"}
