My students were so excited to read the books and to discuss with their groups each week. It was wonderful to hear them talking excitedly about what happened in the story and many students read ahead because they had books that they were so interested in reading. One student told me that she had asked for the rest of the series that she had started (The Maze Runner) for Christmas. \r\n\r\nStudents just finished class presentations today and it was great to hear the discussion about the different books and to see the similarities in the different books since they all were dystopian. Many of the students are excited to pick up a book that they were not assigned and to continue reading on their own. \r\n\r\nAs students read each week, they worked on finding unknown vocabulary, making connections with the stories and the world around them, and then had discussions that looked at character motivation and choices. It was a truly enriching experience for them and I want to thank you for making it possible.","fullyFundedDate":1761224277328,"projectUrl":"project/dystopian-literature-6th-grade-circles/9539747/","projectTitle":"Dystopian Literature 6th Grade Circles","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Caldwell","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10113126"},{"teacherId":10113126,"projectId":9539605,"letterContent":"Implementing the literature circles with the books has been an amazing experience. My students have had the opportunity to work together in groups between 4-6 students as they read both independently and then worked on the projects together. Each week each student had a different job that they had to do focusing on comprehension, discussion or building vocabulary. They were so excited as they met together to talk about their books each week. \r\n\r\nI really enjoyed the conversations that happened as students talked to each other about the books that they were reading from the other groups. Recommendations were made and students are encouraging each other to read the other books in the group as well.\r\n\r\nOne of the things that stood out with these discussions were the conversations and connections they made. I have a few students who are very reluctant readers, but they were able to get into the books and became excited about the stories. One girl reported on the progress of her main character in Ghost and everything that happened. Another student shared how he would have handled things differently from Brian in Hatchet. With Number the Stars, students were very focused on what they would have done in the situation. Some students laughed and worried about everything that Stanley worried about as he struggled to break the curse. \r\n\r\nIt was wonderful to see reading come alive over the last six weeks, and I am truly grateful that you gave my students the opportunity.","fullyFundedDate":1761224277183,"projectUrl":"project/create-a-love-of-reading-with-6th-grade/9539605/","projectTitle":"Create a Love of Reading with 6th Grade Literature Circles","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Caldwell","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10113126"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_1907","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":821,"numTeachers":52,"percentFrplEligible":28,"percentAsian":36,"percentBlack":16,"percentWhite":28,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":14,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"15.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":89.6,"schoolId":1907,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about West Cary Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"West Cary Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/north-carolina/wake-county-public-school-system/west-cary-middle-school/1907"}
