The flexible seating, floor cushions, beanbag, and reading hideaway are especially important because they help students build reading stamina. When students are comfortable and able to choose a reading spot that works for them, they are more likely to stay focused, remain engaged with their books, and read for longer periods of time.\r\n\r\nAnother favorite addition has been our \"book buddies.\" The stuffed characters from familiar stories, such as Pete the Cat, Elephant & Piggie, Clifford, Curious George, and The Very Hungry Caterpillar, give students a special friend to keep them company while they read. Students love choosing a book buddy, finding a cozy seat, and settling in with a good book.\r\n\r\nThese resources support instruction by making independent reading something students look forward to. As students spend more time reading, they have opportunities to strengthen their fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, and confidence while developing positive reading habits.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to continue increasing the amount of time students can independently stay engaged with a book. The Lysol air sanitizer spray is used daily. The tissues have come in handy, especially during cold and flu season. There are often several students sick at the same time. The hand sanitizer is used quite often as well, as they are in the habit of using it after blowing/wiping their nose. The Lysol wipes and paper towels are also being used quite a bit to keep their desks free from messes and germs. Our classroom is cleaner because of you.
