As my students prepare to transition to kindergarten, reading various print literature has helped them in becoming more confident, especially those focused on entering kindergarten. In my classroom, reading is quite unique, we have some students that like an intimate one-on-one story time while others may enjoy a small or large group read aloud. Various books are placed in every learning center in the classroom. Children are encouraged to use books with help from teachers to learn more about a specific topic or for pure enjoyment. \r\n\r\n The more literacy opportunities students are provided with, the more skills children learn that support their ability to retell stories, recount details as well as use context clues to read and comprehend text. Providing a rich language environment helps spur learning. Students should have opportunities to share their thoughts, favorite parts and questions to help increase their phonological awareness, vocabulary, concepts of print and comprehension.
