Many immediately asked, \"Can we really use this? This is for us?!\" For some students, this was their first time seeing or working with materials like a button maker or jewelry-making components. Their excitement quickly turned into focused engagement as they explored ideas, helped one another, and eagerly got to work. It was especially meaningful to see students who don't always shine in traditional academic settings feel confident, capable, and proud of what they created.\r\n\r\nWe have begun using the new makerspace materials during open lunch , and they have already transformed the way students engage with STEAM learning. One memorable moment was when students designed and created their own keychains using Shrinky Dinks. They planned patterns, tested designs, reworked their designs when something didn't turn out as expected, and proudly shared their finished creations with classmates. These projects naturally encouraged problem-solving, creativity, and collaboration while giving students hands-on experience with design and sequencing.\r\n\r\nNext, students will begin more structured STEAM challenges that connect these creative tools to classroom learning. They will design wearable art inspired by geometric patterns, explore symmetry and fractions through origami, and create buttons and jewelry tied to literacy and social studies themes. These projects will serve as entry points into deeper STEAM concepts, helping students make real-world connections while continuing to build creativity, perseverance, and critical thinking skills. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, our makerspace is becoming a vibrant, inclusive environment where every student has the opportunity to explore, create, and grow.","fullyFundedDate":1757524994922,"projectUrl":"project/ready-set-make-relaunching-our-makers/9608427/","projectTitle":"Ready, Set, Make! One particularly exciting moment was when we saw the first tiny sprouts emerge-- on day 3!! The students were absolutely buzzing with excitement, comparing leaf development and discussing the science behind it. \r\n\r\nThe initial reaction from most students is a mixture of awe and curiosity. They are fascinated by the system and always start asking questions about how it all works. \r\n\r\nOur next steps involve expanding our hydroponic garden to include a wider variety of plants, and to begin documenting the data we collect. We're planning to also add an outdoor set of box gardens so we can transplant our small plants outside for larger growth.
