For students who have difficulty communicating through speech, having access to an AAC device has provided them with something far more important than a communication tool—it has given them a voice.\r\n\r\nSince using their AAC devices, my students have been able to express their wants, needs, thoughts, feelings, and ideas in ways that were previously difficult or impossible. I have witnessed students independently request items, make choices, answer questions, participate in classroom activities, interact with peers, and communicate when something is wrong.\r\n\r\nOne of the most meaningful changes has been seeing increased independence and confidence. Instead of relying solely on adults to interpret their gestures, facial expressions, or behaviors, students can communicate more directly and \r\n\r\nMost importantly, AAC reminds us that communication is more than spoken words. Every student has something to say, and every student deserves the opportunity to be heard. Providing reliable access to AAC allows my students to demonstrate their abilities, share their personalities, advocate for themselves, and have a meaningful voice in their own lives.\r\n\r\nI am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to support my students as they develop their communication skills. Your generosity has given my students a new way to experience stories, build their listening skills, and develop a love of books and storytelling.\r\n\r\nIn Pre-K, so much learning happens through listening, talking, retelling, and repetition. The Toniebox allows my students to independently listen to stories and songs during our classroom day. Because it is designed for young children to operate on their own, they are able to make choices, practice independence, and enjoy literacy experiences without needing a screen.\r\n\r\nWe will use our Toniebox during centers, quiet times, and as an extension of the stories and topics we are learning about together. Listening to familiar stories again and again helps my students strengthen vocabulary, comprehension, sequencing, and their ability to retell a story in their own words. Most importantly, it gives them another opportunity to discover that stories and learning can be fun.\r\n\r\nFor four- and five-year-olds, those opportunities make a big difference. These resources have quickly become a meaningful part of our daily learning routines. We use the whiteboard during whole-group instruction for letter recognition, name writing practice, counting activities, and interactive morning meetings. The felt board has been especially helpful during story retelling, sequencing activities, and hands-on literacy lessons where students can physically move pieces and engage with the content.\r\n\r\nOne special classroom moment happened during a read-aloud activity when students used the felt board pieces to retell the story in their own words. It was amazing to see their confidence grow as they took turns participating, communicating ideas, and working together. The storage space has also helped us stay organized and made it easier for students to independently access materials during centers and small-group learning.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the new materials, their excitement filled the room! They were eager to explore the boards, touch the felt pieces, and immediately started asking questions about how we would use them. Seeing their smiles and enthusiasm reminded us how impactful classroom resources can be in creating engaging and meaningful learning experiences. We've been using the Toniebox during learning centers, calming time, and transitions throughout the day. Students listen to stories and songs during Music and Movement, enjoy gentle audio in our calming center, follow along with their favorite stories in our library center, and explore themed content that connects to our classroom lessons. The Toniebox has supported language development, listening skills, independence, and social-emotional growth while giving students a joyful, screen-free way to learn.\r\n\r\nThe students reactions have been priceless. They light up when choosing a Tonie, eagerly gather to listen together, and often retell stories afterward in their own words. When our Tonie arrived, one student gifted us with his favorite Tonie from home, and of course it has become a favorite for everyone at school too. It quickly has become one of our most loved classroom resources. Children practice taking turns, sharing, and focusing and many seek it out when they need a quiet moment to reset. These skills are especially important at this age.\r\n\r\nBecause of how successful this project has been, we're excited to share that we are launching a new DonorsChoose project to add a second Toniebox and more Tonies. This will allow more students to participate at once and expand our listening choice across multiple centers.
