Students used the ping pong balls and chips to build molecules, count atoms, and explore the concept of moles in engaging, hands-on ways. The multipurpose baskets were especially helpful for organizing group materials during lab stations and activities like our edible gummy worm lab, where students explored solutions and polymer chemistry. The baskets kept each group's materials accessible and organized, making labs smoother and more student-led.\r\n\r\nYour support has made a real difference in transforming our classroom into a more interactive, collaborative, and exciting learning environment. \r\n\r\nThank you for helping make chemistry meaningful and memorable for our students!","fullyFundedDate":1743597633970,"projectUrl":"project/stem-supplies-for-active-minds/9176905/","projectTitle":"STEM Supplies For Active Minds!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Ramos","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9727717_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1738185675967","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9727717"},{"teacherId":9727717,"projectId":9085398,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous donation of books and classroom resources that have greatly enhanced our chemistry instruction.\r\n\r\nWith your support, students were able to engage in collaborative group activities using POGIL strategies—working together to think critically, ask questions, and explore chemistry concepts through guided inquiry. Your support has truly made an impact on our classroom, allowing students to engage in hands-on learning experiences that have sparked their curiosity and deepened their appreciation for science. It was incredible to see their excitement as they worked on experiments that would not have been possible without your contribution.\r\n\r\nOne of the most engaging projects made possible by your generosity involved the creation of a historical pigment—malachite. The students were fascinated by the process of synthesizing this beautiful green pigment, just as it was done centuries ago. They then used the malachite pigment to create paint, exploring how different binders affect its texture, appearance, and usability. To do this, they experimented with three traditional binders: egg yolk, linseed oil, and gum Arabic. Through this activity, students were able to compare the properties of each binder and determine which was most effective in creating a smooth and durable paint. Their discussions were lively, and their observations insightful, as they connected chemistry with both history and art in a meaningful way.\r\n\r\nThis project not only reinforced important scientific concepts but also allowed students to step into the shoes of historical artists and craftsmen. Malachite has been used as a pigment for thousands of years, dating back to ancient Egypt and the Renaissance period, where it was prized for its vibrant green hues. Artists and alchemists would have had to consider the best binding agents for their work, just as our students did in their experiments. Learning about how chemistry has played a role in art throughout history gave them a newfound appreciation for the intersection of science and creativity.\r\n\r\nThe joy on their faces as they tested their handmade paints was priceless. They were deeply engaged in the process, asking thoughtful questions and drawing connections between what they were learning in chemistry and what artists of the past experienced. Their enthusiasm for this experiment is a testament to how impactful hands-on learning can be, and we owe that opportunity to you.\r\n\r\nTo share in the success of this project, we have included some pictures showcasing the students' work with malachite pigment and their paint creations. Their pride in their work was evident, and they were thrilled to know that someone like you cared enough to support their learning journey. Their thank you letters also contain malachite pigment which I am happy to share with you.\r\n\r\nThank you once again for your generosity and commitment to education. Your support has not only provided us with essential supplies but has also inspired our students to explore science in new and exciting ways. We truly appreciate your contribution and look forward to sharing more of our students' discoveries with you in the future.","fullyFundedDate":1735701147643,"projectUrl":"project/learning-by-doing/8979758/","projectTitle":"Learning by Doing","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Ramos","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9727717_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1738185675967","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9727717"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_2502","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":924,"numTeachers":72,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":16,"percentWhite":70,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":8,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"12.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":75.0,"schoolId":2502,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Burns High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Burns High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/north-carolina/cleveland-county-school-district/burns-high-school/2502"}
