Our school has a very diverse and vibrant population of students. Around half of the students in our school speak Spanish. Many of these students arrive with very few skills in English and having books available in Spanish for these students really helps them feel more included in our school community as they learn English and learn about American schools.\r\n\r\nMany of the books that were purchased are books that we also have in English. This allows our Spanish-speaking students to enjoy the same books that our English-speaking students are reading. It also allows Spanish-speaking students to read the books in Spanish and then go to the English version and better understand it. Literacy skills transfer from one language to another, so helping students maintain literacy in their first language while they develop skills in a second language makes them stronger readers in both languages.\r\n\r\nOur ESL classes were very excited about coming to the library to look at the new Spanish books and check them out in the spring and I know that they will continue to visit the library and use the books in Spanish. Many of these students love to read and your generosity has allowed us to offer them more choices of books in Spanish for them to read and enjoy. I truly appreciate your kindness in helping me provide these books for our newest students!","fullyFundedDate":1743015918814,"projectUrl":"project/en-espaol-por-favor/9124885/","projectTitle":"¡En español, por favor!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Cordeiro","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp2043584_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1449503285677","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/tammycordeiro"},{"teacherId":9975866,"projectId":9246463,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generosity, my students are now reading like scientists—outside, under the trees they're studying. With the Tree Identification Field Guides, they're learning to use indexes, diagrams, and identification keys to match real-world observations to species in the book.\r\n\r\nReading has become active and collaborative—students compare leaves and bark to photos, debate their findings, and connect their data to the carbon cycle. One formerly quiet student now leads group identifications with confidence, and another keeps a nature journal inspired by the guide.\r\n\r\nYou've turned reading into an adventure and helped my students connect science to the living world around them. The materials you funded became the building blocks of creativity, innovation, and real-world problem-solving in our classroom.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials arrived, my students were very excited. In small teams, they researched renewable energy, brainstormed design plans, and worked within a budget to build their houses. They then tested the solar panel and wind turbine. All the students were able to get their houses to generate the energy to light up a small LED. Along the way, they collected data, revised their designs, and learned how sustainability and engineering intersect.\r\n\r\nThis project didn't just teach them about energy. To complete the project students had to plan, assign roles, and work as a team. Next, we will place the houses in the library and the entire school will be able to vote on them.\r\n\r\nThank you for your generosity to our Earth Environmental Science class!","fullyFundedDate":1742944535567,"projectUrl":"project/hands-on-building-a-solar-and-wind-powe/9208007/","projectTitle":"Hands-on!
