Students eagerly tested and blended colors, compared tones, and expressed excitement about finally having materials that reflected a wide range of skin tones. Many commented on how different and professional the toned paper felt, which instantly raised their level of care and focus. The supplies made students feel trusted as artists, and that sense of respect showed in how thoughtfully they approached their work from the very beginning.\r\n\r\nAs the portrait project progressed, students began studying the work of a variety of portrait artists and discussing different stylistic approaches. They were encouraged to adapt elements they admired—such as expressive line work, bold color choices, realism, incorporation of patterns, or simplified features—into their own portraits rather than copying a single example. With the new materials, students naturally extended beyond the original expectations of the project, combining portrait pencils with graphite and markers to create mixed media pieces. This layering enhanced the emotion and individuality of their work, allowing students to communicate personality, mood, and identity in ways that felt authentic to them. Many students took creative risks, experimenting with contrast and texture as they developed a style that felt uniquely their own.\r\n\r\nBecause of your generosity, these materials will continue to shape future lessons and projects. Students are now building on this experience by creating more in-depth mixed media portraits that explore personal identity while continuing to reference and adapt stylistic influences from professional artists. Your contribution gave you a meaningful glimpse into a classroom where students feel inspired to experiment, reflect, and grow. These supplies did more than support a single project—they helped students see themselves as artists with a voice, capable of blending influence and originality into powerful, expressive work.","fullyFundedDate":1758404424389,"projectUrl":"project/portrait-drawing-for-middle-school-art-c/9713067/","projectTitle":"Portrait Drawing for Middle School Art Class","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Gunther","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10260333_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1757793042935","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10260333"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_2227","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":630,"numTeachers":33,"percentFrplEligible":66,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":27,"percentWhite":31,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":29,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"19.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":36.8,"schoolId":2227,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Woodlawn Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Woodlawn Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/north-carolina/alamance-burlington-school-system/woodlawn-middle-school/2227"}
