With these new classroom sets, we can explicitly teach core literacy skills such as comprehension, inference, character development, theme, and connections across chapters. Using a shared novel like Holes allows us to pause, reread, discuss vocabulary, and model how strong readers think before, during, and after reading. Students are learning that reading isn't just about finishing a book — it's about understanding it, talking about it, and enjoying it together.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is interactive and student-centered. We read aloud, read independently, and read in small groups, stopping often to predict, clarify confusing parts, and share ideas. The Dog Man series has been especially powerful for motivating reluctant readers. These books encourage fluency, confidence, and laughter, and students who once avoided reading are now eager to pick up a book and share their favorite parts with peers. The humor and visuals lower anxiety and help students see themselves as readers.\r\n\r\nSeveral students who struggle with attention or confidence have shown the biggest growth. One student who rarely completed a chapter independently now proudly talks about plot twists in Holes, while others ask to reread Dog Man during free time simply because they love it. Your donation didn't just provide books; it created a community of readers who feel successful, excited, and included. Thank you for helping our students discover that reading can be both meaningful and fun. 💛","fullyFundedDate":1747329206211,"projectUrl":"project/class-book-sets-and-of-course-dog-man/9348672/","projectTitle":"Class Book Sets and of Course Dog Man!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Kwiatkowski","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6386936_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1766760653675","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6386936"},{"teacherId":6386936,"projectId":9091262,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generous support, our students are putting their new resources to incredible use—and you made it all possible! Each month, they bake treats for children in foster care, spreading joy and kindness while building essential kitchen skills. They also bake cookies to sell at school, using the proceeds to purchase additional supplies, which allows their learning and creativity to keep growing. Your contribution is directly helping them take ownership of their knowledge and make a difference in their community.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the new materials, their excitement was immediate—they were eager to explore new recipes, try new techniques, and see what they could create. Since then, they've expanded their skills, experimenting with a wide variety of cookies and even starting a baking class to teach new students these valuable skills. You've helped make this possible, giving them the tools to share their knowledge with others and grow in confidence.\r\n\r\nOne student's passion for baking has even led to a real-world opportunity: they are now completing an internship at a local bakery, gaining professional experience that will benefit them far beyond the classroom. Your support has opened doors for these students, helping them learn, create, and make a meaningful impact on their peers and community.","fullyFundedDate":1742936228957,"projectUrl":"project/treats-for-children-in-foster-care/9091262/","projectTitle":"Treats for Children in Foster Care","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Kwiatkowski","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6386936_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1766760653675","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6386936"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_131017","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":null,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":35,"percentAsian":11,"percentBlack":18,"percentWhite":56,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":6,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Not specified","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR District Weighted Average","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"UNCLASSIFIED","ncesMetroType":null},"inStateSupporters":69.2,"schoolId":131017,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Ready Academy Big Picture Sweet Home High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Ready Academy Big Picture Sweet Home High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/sweet-home-central-school-district/ready-academy-sweet-home-high-school/131017"}
