Prior to your generous donation, the library had numerous damaged sections of wall which made the space look like an institution or afterthought, and by extension the students who used it. During the summer before school begins, classrooms are supposed to be painted, but that did not happen for the library. When students arrived to the new program which started in September this year, they were greeted with tear marks and screws and tack holes in the library walls, yellow marks from old tape, and very little aesthetically pleasing color or messaging.\r\n\r\nWhen students first arrived and saw me unpacking the materials, their faces lit up and the excitement of being noticed and cared about was immediate. Far too often, the limited and overworked budget of schools, particularly in urban settings where the industrial tax base has departed, must be devoted to meeting program requirements. This leaves aesthetics and beautification by the wayside, but thankfully we have a generous supporter who believes in giving these kids something nice to look at while they are working. The first two students through the door got to work immediately helping me put up motivational posters at eye level, using their knowledge of where groups which could use the extra emotional support sit during lunch visits.\r\n\r\nThe library is a common area for the whole school, and has a disproportionate impact for its size versus an individual classroom because the entire building population passes through at some point. Many students use it for a safe space and refuge from the trials of their day during lunch break or during particularly difficult situations when they cannot function in class anymore. Having this space available and looking like we care about the students who use it helps to keep some kids out of detention or suspension who are not having disciplinary issues but emotional. Having motivational support in every direction is a huge benefit to students struggling with day to day life.","fullyFundedDate":1733267626763,"projectUrl":"project/new-library-opening-in-bilingual-buildin/8825602/","projectTitle":"New Library Opening in Bilingual Building!","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Waller","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9779277_orig.jpg?crop=634,634,x0,y95&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1758201724250","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9779277"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_132663","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":505,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":80,"percentAsian":2,"percentBlack":37,"percentWhite":7,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":29,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"7 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR District Record","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":null},"inStateSupporters":87.5,"schoolId":132663,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Dr Freddie Thomas Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Dr Freddie Thomas Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/rochester-city-school-district/dr-freddie-thomas-middle-school/132663"}
