I am most grateful for your belief in and support of me and my students. \r\n\r\nI am a graduate student studying Early Childhood Education birth to second grade at Brooklyn college. My love for teaching and science has molded me into an individual who would thrive in a career as a preschool teacher creating different hands-on activities for my students at night. Although my academic journey as a first-generation non-traditional college student has not been an easy one, I am proud to admit that my perseverance has led me to pursue many opportunities offered in New York City. \r\n\r\nI read, \"Functional Play: This form of play is often referred to as \"sensory- motor\" play, because the child is exploring at the sensory-motor level of cognition. Functional play is characterized by a child's exploration of an object or a movement in a simple or repetitive fashion, and where the goal is to discover characteristics of it through their senses and motor behavior.\"(Pg.2.). That is to say that my students grasped these characteristics of play and can show curiosity and desire as they gravitate to independently explore the natural environment. \r\n\r\nThrough my last observations adding to the donated materials, I was able to facilitate my student's type of play with more confidence realizing that they were exposed to tools that they are able to explore by themselves filled with curiosity. For example, my students engaged positively in constructive play while playing in the dramatic area: Constructive play is characterized by the manipulation of objects or materials in order to make, construct, or \"create\" something else. The goal is the transformation of raw materials into \"something.\" Some of my students used their cognitive skills to transform the use of baskets (the ones that were donated) into a transferable tool in the kitchen area, and this connected to their background knowledge. \r\n\r\n They used the green mats (donated by the donors) to pretend they were at a picnic, and I was very happy to observe the connections to the real world. I want to extend my sincere thanks and appreciation for what the donors have made possible, a sense of possibilities for my students, the beauty and manifesting social aspects of positive interactions while playing has been implemented thanks to you. \r\n\r\nAs a child I used to admire my preschool teachers. I felt joyful in my classroom just because we had enough colorful crayons in my classroom. Likewise, as a young girl I was very curious and engaged in plays using my imagination and real-life events connected my imagination to fun experiences and until now I still sense the feeling of bringing the best in me as an adult. Receiving these donations will allow me to continue chasing my dreams as a teacher. Your earnest investment in my future goals will not be forgotten.
