They Called Us Enemy provides a deeply personal lens on Japanese Internment, allowing students to explore themes of resilience, injustice, and empathy through the firsthand account of George Takei. Meanwhile, If You Were a Kid During the Civil Rights Movement encourages students to imagine themselves in history, fostering critical thinking about social change and the courage of ordinary people. These texts not only enhance their understanding of content but also build literacy skills like analyzing primary sources, understanding narrative voice, and making connections to modern issues.\r\n\r\nOne student, Jeremy, who struggles with language fluency, has been especially captivated by the graphic novel format of They Called Us Enemy.
