These books have opened up dynamic opportunities for our small ELL U.S. History class to connect with complex historical topics like the Cold War, Japanese Internment, and the Civil Rights Movement in ways that are engaging and accessible.\r\n\r\nThrough The Butter Battle Book, students are learning to interpret allegory and symbolism, discovering how a simple narrative can reveal profound lessons about the Cold War's arms race and the dangers of division. They Called Us Enemy provides a deeply personal lens on Japanese Internment, allowing students to explore themes of resilience, injustice, and empathy through the firsthand account of George Takei. Meanwhile, If You Were a Kid During the Civil Rights Movement encourages students to imagine themselves in history, fostering critical thinking about social change and the courage of ordinary people. These texts not only enhance their understanding of content but also build literacy skills like analyzing primary sources, understanding narrative voice, and making connections to modern issues.\r\n\r\nOne student, Jeremy, who struggles with language fluency, has been especially captivated by the graphic novel format of They Called Us Enemy. The visuals have helped him grasp difficult vocabulary and immerse herself in the emotional weight of the story. Another student, Marney, who often hesitates to speak up in class, shared a thoughtful connection between The Butter Battle Book and the ongoing challenges of global diplomacy today. These books are helping students feel confident and valued as contributors to our discussions, inspiring them to engage deeply with both history and their own learning journeys.\r\n\r\nYour support has made a lasting impact in fostering curiosity, understanding, and a love for reading in our classroom. We are so grateful for your investment in our students' growth.","fullyFundedDate":1729435317259,"projectUrl":"project/themes-in-us-history-story-books/8889482/","projectTitle":"Themes in U.S. History Story Books","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Belyea","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-5_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9786828"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_23096","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1585,"numTeachers":101,"percentFrplEligible":57,"percentAsian":6,"percentBlack":24,"percentWhite":30,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":34,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"15.7:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":84.0,"schoolId":23096,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about North Babylon High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"North Babylon High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/north-babylon-union-free-school-district/north-babylon-high-school/23096"}
