This project—providing copies of The Lightning Thief and Hatchet—did more than supply books; it provided stability, ownership, and a critical foundation for advanced literary analysis. Many of you who love reading understand the importance of narrative, and these books were specifically chosen to introduce complex skills. The Lightning Thief allowed us to delve into character development and the archetypes of mythology, teaching students how a protagonist's internal struggle (Percy's ADHD and dyslexia) drives the external plot. Similarly, Hatchet served as a powerful text for exploring themes of resilience and man versus nature through close reading, providing a safe, fictional way to process the isolation and uncertainty many students felt in their own lives. We learned to track the development of themes using textual evidence from two vastly different genres.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom, whether virtual or hybrid, has been fundamentally transformed by the fact that every student owns their own copy. This is no longer a passive exercise; it is active literacy. Students are encouraged to practice scholarly annotation, highlighting key passages, underlining figurative language, and writing their own questions and summaries in the margins. This sense of ownership has given my 6th graders a critical sense of agency over their learning. When we convene for discussion, the conversation is richer because students refer directly to their personalized notes and highlighted evidence. They are no longer simply consuming a story; they are becoming critical readers who understand that interpretation is a dialogue between the reader and the text. For many, having a high-quality physical book felt like a tangible, reliable resource when so much else was virtual and fluid.\r\n\r\nThe impact has been especially pronounced among students who previously struggled with reading motivation. I think immediately of one student, who we'll call Javier. Javier often found traditional academic texts distant, but he was instantly captivated by the sheer survival mechanics in Hatchet. He began coming to class not just having read the assignment, but having read ahead, genuinely anxious to find out if Brian Robeson would catch the fish or build the fire. This engagement translated into deeper comprehension and the confidence to lead group discussions—a role he had previously avoided. When we pivoted to The Lightning Thief, the fantastical element appealed to another set of students, particularly those grappling with the feeling of being different. They saw themselves reflected in the demigods' struggles, proving that when the right book finds the right student, it ignites the spark of lifelong reading. Thank you for igniting that spark in my classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1599138098265,"projectUrl":"project/put-a-novel-into-students-hands-for-rem/5108014/","projectTitle":"Put a Novel Into Student's Hands for Remote Learning","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Byrne","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp383394_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1537129689598","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/383394"},{"teacherId":383394,"projectId":9724557,"letterContent":"Thank you for the gift you've given my students. Your generosity has truly transformed our classroom library from a functional collection into a vibrant hub of exploration. As requested, students now have a more diverse library to choose books from, including varying genres and characters of different cultural backgrounds. This immediate access to new stories has been inspiring to watch. For example, I have a student who has always struggled with finding a book that holds their interest; they're now absolutely engrossed in one of the new historical fiction graphic novels. Seeing that spark of self-discovery—that moment when a student finds a book that speaks directly to them—is the most profound impact of your donation.\r\n\r\nMany of our donors are avid readers, but may not realize the skills these new texts help us teach. Beyond just increasing reading fluency, these books have introduced crucial lessons in empathy, critical thinking, and communication. When students read about characters from different cultural backgrounds or socio-economic circumstances, they naturally begin to ask deeper questions about fairness and perspective. The new non-fiction selections, which include subjects like climate science and engineering, are teaching my students how to analyze complex data and differentiate between fact and opinion, which are essential skills for their future.\r\n\r\n Our independent reading time is no longer a quiet obligation, but a joyful, personalized activity where students are excited to pull a new selection off the shelf. Because the library reflects so many more interests and identities, every student feels a sense of ownership over the collection. In other classrooms, they did not have the opportunity to sit where they want to sit and read due to lack of resources. My students have also enjoyed the read aloud books that were provided and it was much more beneficial for them to hear me reading it instead of using a video online of the book. My students also enjoy sitting on the wobble cushions and have never had the opportunity to do so until this year. Those cushions are assigned to specific students for this year who know they can use those to help them focus in their chair better. A lot of those students do take advantage of that and need the extra support to stay seated and focused. \r\n\r\nWe are very thankful for your gift and being able to have these resources in our classroom.
