The students, who are mostly young men, are completely immersed in the story of this teenage girl. The girls in the class say they feel seen by her story. Many of the students can relate to her experiences, from doubting her faith to living in a community like Harlem.\r\n\r\nAs many students hadn't read a book in years, I started teaching this book using Literature Circles, where the students read together and each has a job to do as they read. One person is the Vocab Master, keeping track of unfamiliar words; another is the Connector, making connections with the real world; another is the Predictor, predicting what will happen next. The students rotate these jobs and, as we progress, they are learning to perform all these jobs as they read.\r\n\r\nWe also have lively discussions about each character, how they change over time, what motivates them, and the bigger issues they face, which are not unlike issues the students themselves face. We sometimes draw images that reflect themes or moments in the book. I have one student, who currently has no regular housing, who identifies with being forced to go to church when she doesn't believe. Another student of mine, whose mother does not accept her sexuality, sees herself in Xiomara, the main character, as well. A young man who has recently returned to his faith appreciates Xiomara's journey. And many of the students reacted to descriptions of school, including having to pass through metal detectors, revealing the trauma the experiences causes.\r\n\r\nI've learned so much as well teaching this book. My students teach me everyday. Thank you again for the opportunity to learn from each other using this powerful text.","fullyFundedDate":1735615609882,"projectUrl":"project/the-book-the-poet-x-for-my-non-tradition/8937990/","projectTitle":"The Book The Poet X for My Non-Traditional Class","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Chantal","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9833265_orig.jpg?crop=2316,2316,x0,y524&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1731439946148","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9833265"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_133609","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":null,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":62,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":19,"percentWhite":13,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":61,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Not specified","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR District Record","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"UNCLASSIFIED","ncesMetroType":null},"inStateSupporters":100.0,"schoolId":133609,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Newburgh YouthBuild on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Newburgh YouthBuild","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/newburgh-enlarged-city-sd/newburgh-youthbuild/133609"}
