We have enjoyed the donations and because most of the materials are reusable or easily substituted at low costs, these materials will spark a love for science in my future students. The donations have allowed for so many deep thought discussions that we plan to embrace every science lesson! What I love most, is when my students ask what are we doing in science next? Our students use their flexible seating mats everyday during independent reading and love the autonomy, flexibility and fun it adds to their reading routine. We also use them as incentives for students to stay focused on their books and it has worked wonders for this block, with students doing their best to stay motivated in order to get a chance to sit on a comfy cushion and choose their color. \r\n\r\nThe rug was am instant hit among the kids and added comfort and flair to our classroom. Due to the demands of our scheduling, we aren't always able to offer the most robust science experiences. Typically students have science 2-3 times a week for 30 minutes. As much as we try to provide students with hands-on experiences, we often fall short. With your help, we used this opportunity to create a full 2-hour lab experience that students got to experience in small groups. This opportunity offered all third graders the time they needed to engage, and explore, new ideas. \r\n\r\nThe first lab experience of the year was the \"Cloud in a bottle.\" Our kids could barely contain their excitement the moment they walked into the classroom and saw each lab station. Many of the kids had the same reaction to seeing the safety googles; they exclaimed that they \"couldn't believe that they were going to do real science.\" As children examined the bottles and saw the liquid crystal thermometers, they made wonderful connections to the math work they had been doing with vertical number lines. They were amazed that compression could change the air temperature and developed wonderful explanations. Students engaged in a lively debate over whether the match caused the temperature change, with students referring back to the data set to justify their thinking. Despite allocating a few minutes for creating the cloud, students continued to find joy in squeezing the bottle and making one appear. \r\n\r\nOne of the best moments of the experience came when one group started to pose questions about cloud formation around the world. They asked questions like \"Could a cloud form in a desert without water?\" and \"Can clouds form in Antartica, if there is no warm air?\" It was amazing to see that they could reason about the \"ingredients\" (as they called it) and attempt to make sense of the world around them. Science, at its best!\r\n\r\nWe look at this experience as the start of many. We are beginning to design the investigation for creating electrical circuits next!","fullyFundedDate":1711552959434,"projectUrl":"project/help-us-with-our-investigations/8273471/","projectTitle":"Help Us With Our Investigations!","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Dan","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp4112115_orig.jpg?crop=726,726,x135,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1709234470510","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/4112115"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_103210","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":183,"numTeachers":38,"percentFrplEligible":64,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":33,"percentWhite":2,"percentIndigenous":1,"percentLatinx":61,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"4.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":69.8,"schoolId":103210,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about New York City Montessori Charter School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"New York City Montessori Charter School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/new-york-state-department-education/new-york-city-montessori-cs/103210"}
