As you can see from the photos, the students absolutely adore the new couch and stools in the room. Whenever we have work time, they are constantly flocking to sit on them.\r\n\r\nIt is so special to have such nice new materials for class. It makes the room feel more sophisticated as well as comfortable. We love having the fun places for them to do their scenes.\r\n\r\nSo much of my memory as a young theater kid was in theater spaces, and it's fantastic to have that opportunity for the students in my class. \r\n\r\nThank you again for your donation! I hope to impart the immense impact your generosity has had on the entire KIPP Beyond community. You have contributed to the well-being, behavioral engagement, collaborative learning and social interactions of every student in the Crochet in Comfort project. Outside of the project students are utilizing the comfortable seating you donated for reading circles, independent learning, and I've even captured a few snoozes!\r\n\r\n\"It's these chairs, they kinda trap you and you never want to get up from them.\" - Jeter, age 11\r\n\"This is my new favorite place to be, it is just so calming.\" - Trayshon, age 11\r\n\"I'm so excited about my project and its progress, I've really learned a lot.\" - Zanna, age 13\r\n\r\nThe relaxed seating is an instant switch turning the classroom into a lounge. Crocheting (knitting and weaving) asks our students to repeat actions, focus, identify patterns, and coordinate between the hand and the eye - all of which can positively impact cognitive ability. This focus on creating something turns off the mind's wanting to roam through the days events and to lock in on a cadence that aligns, breathing and your heartbeat. Soft music, and light snacks - all a reenforce a sense of calm and escape. Some choose to listen to audiobooks or music while they are creating. As their creations come to life, or they tapped to be a co-teacher, confidence and pride grow! This is evident by the number of curious passersby, colleagues advocating for a teacher's version, and parents that have positively messaged about their child, or asked to come to the class sometime.\r\n\r\n\"Uh, yeah, I can work with this.\" - Kaiden, age 11\r\n\"I wish I could do this at least three times a week.\" - Hunter, age 11\r\n\"Can I take this home, I would like to practice.\" - Aisha, age 12\r\n\r\nOverall students are actively engaged in this course. Some of the students are autistic, others may frequent detention for behavior. During this class there are no Paraeducators or co-teachers to help navigate individual needs, nor are they needed. Students are so engaged, interruptions are minimal and when they arise, easily redirected. Having comfortable and movable seating provides the ability for a student to select somewhere else to sit if they need a moment. Positive peer influence is manifest throughout the course, within friend groups I will hear one peer encourage their fellow student back to the task, or to revert to calm behavior or conversation.\r\n\r\nStudents learn but also teach. In the opening class four students were identified to co-teach in smaller groups. After class I asked these students what they learned about teaching, and one responded, \"that I don't want to teach my friends and I'm going to be better in classes tomorrow, respect, teaching is hard.\" We are about halfway through the course with almost every student having had an opportunity to teach what they've learned to someone else.\r\n\r\n\"I like that it's like I'm hanging out with my friends at home doing crafts together.\" - Camren, age 11\r\n\"We can sit and bond with other like we've never done before.\" - Mulan, age 12\r\n\"It's cool that eight-graders are here, and that they are helping us.\" - Sasha, age 11\r\n\"I choose to be here, I could be somewhere else, but this is where I want to be.\" - Kemora, age 13\r\n\r\nClass begins in a community circle where we discuss highlights of learning from the previous session and goals for our time together. Students then break into smaller groups. There are the weavers, a group of sixth graders from the Step team, the quiet crew who work while listening to music, and a group I call rainbow (a diverse group of personalities, grades, genders, etc). Each group has been created organically. I will encourage movement from one group to another, but this too happens on its own. Recently a sixth grade Stepper, made the choice to engage with the 8th grade led diversity crew. The change in her conversation and energy upon returning to her regular cohort was undeniable. She was more calm, focused on her project and steered the conversation to more mature, positive topics.\r\n\r\nOpening the packages together was joyous occasion that was recorded and shared school wide on a Beyond News broadcast. However, the brightest moment had to be the first class when students walked into a room set with care and their comfort in mind, astounding, still bring tears to my eyes. Every class, the warm and inviting atmosphere move them to want to participate and give something new a try. \r\n\r\nI cannot capture every moment, quote, picture, and experience. At the end of every class my heart is full of joy and pride that we've made this happen for these students. Thank you for choosing to donate, thank you for giving to our community!\r\n\r\n\"Literally, the best part of my week, I wish I could do this as my full-time job.\" - Ms. T","fullyFundedDate":1729518118577,"projectUrl":"project/crochet-in-comfort/8860521/","projectTitle":"Crochet in Comfort!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. T","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9794719_orig.jpg?crop=600,600,x0,y18&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1728858095027","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9794719"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_128159","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":81,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":72,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":56,"percentWhite":4,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":32,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 6","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":60.7,"schoolId":128159,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about KIPP Beyond Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"KIPP Beyond Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/new-york-state-department-education/kipp-beyond/128159"}
