The students did get instantly curious for this project since the curriculum we use had very limited hands on experience for the Matter unit. The students were very curious for all parts but we reviewed what we had learned with solubility to predict what would come of combining all ingredients. \r\n\r\nStudents could take a brief drink from the bottles to create space, but then I calmly set them up to bring their bottles for drops of coloring and we first started with discussing if the food coloring and water of the bottles were soluble and that they were- high attraction. Then before adding the cooking oil, I asked them to predict if there would be similar solubility with that, most predicted no and were correct. Lastly I told them to carefully place in the broken tablet pieces of Alkaseltzer and guess what would happen, but we placed that talk for after placing the pieces in and promptly capping the bottles, not unlike a prior investigation we did with plain water and Alkaseltzer tablets.\r\n\r\n The kids were smiling plenty and enjoying seeing the oil and water moving freely and repelling. We did have a final discussion of the unit and a preview towards our second unit about Earth spheres (biosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere, and atmosphere) before we wrapped for the time. They also got a prompt reminder to be careful with the bottles now under pressure if they bring them home and how they cannot replace the CO2 gas unless they add more tablet pieces. \r\n\r\nThis was my first project and it was much appreciated and I wish I could show the student faces in the pictures but they're emoji covered for student privacy sake. This was also with doing with just one of the two fifth grade classes so far and I have no doubt the other class will enjoy this too!
