When I told them it is nice people who want to give back to their education, they smiled and promised to not to put their head down in class that whole week, as they didn't want to let their supporters down. \r\n\r\nI like to reward my students for helping me out around the classroom, such as by giving them a toy for sharpening pencils or a candy for wiping the whiteboards. It makes them feel useful. Thank you for allowing me to reward them for their good behavior. The students have declared it \"so vintage\" and love learning how to use it! I was surprised how many students have record players at home and have brought their records in to play and share. It has become a real source of joy and community, bringing students into conversations and experiencing something new to them, together.\r\n\r\nI also love how my administrators and teachers are reacting--many of them have come in to tell me about their record collections or their memories from childhood. Our physics teacher wants to teach the kids how to make their own record players ala Mr. Wizard! It also caught the eye of the New York City Public Schools social media team and they plan to feature our library and our record player on their social media feed in January!\r\n\r\nMy original group of seniors who had the suggestion of a record player on the first day of school and inspired this grant have LOVED all of the praise and appreciation they have received, both from me and from their administrators. Their attention is getting swallowed up by their phones and devices and scary news stories. I have found that one way I can get them to put down their devices and actually engage with each other and with myself is by giving them creative outlets and ways of using their hands to make things. The materials you provided to our library have allowed my students to engage in creative projects and channel their energy in a productive, screen-free way!\r\n\r\nThe students who asked for sewing and embroidery materials were SO excited when the materials arrived. They looked through the kits and chose their favorites.
