Even virtually, I noticed students were so engaged with the content. Perhaps it was Bryan Stevenson's writing voice and style. Perhaps it was the fact that they had just witnessed the tragic death of George Floyd. But for something to capture their attention at a time when it was so hard to keep their attention, I knew this book was special. \r\n\r\nAs such, I ordered some for that following school year. With schools having tight(er) budgets, students often end up reading books that are damaged from the general usage from year to year. Providing our seniors with fresh copies of Just Mercy is community in action and we appreciate it. \r\n\r\nIn our class, students read in groups/circles to mirror book clubs. However, for Just Mercy the discussion is so rich that we often read together, pausing to discuss each person's journey. This book is a precursor to their research projects on a social injustice in the world or country. Thanks for the generosity!","fullyFundedDate":1741105492773,"projectUrl":"project/from-pages-to-purpose-help-fund-just-me/9099332/","projectTitle":"From Pages to Purpose: Help Fund Just Mercy for Students\"","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Jones","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6405606_orig.jpg?crop=532,532,x17,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1564115505581","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6405606"},{"teacherId":9875933,"projectId":9009667,"letterContent":"Thank you for your donations. The students have been delighted to know there is always one granola bar available to them each day. The 1619 Project: A Visual Experience is exactly what my students needed to bring to life many of the things they have learned and are learning in AP African-American Studies. \r\n\r\nA key component of this interdisciplinary class involves analysis of historical documents as well as images (both modern and historical/dated). This book has given my students a chance to practice those analysis skills. From short essays about concepts like democracy and race to the very real and tragic experiences of fear and dispossession, the book gives students different access points to the history of this country. \r\n\r\nReading the book in class looks like working with a partner to examine the sources and using various protocols to explore the images.
