These cards give them the targeted support they need to break down multisyllabic words, recognize spelling patterns, and build fluency. One of our favorite ways to use them is during partner reading, where students help each other decode unfamiliar words using strategies from the cards. It's been powerful to see them taking ownership of their learning.\r\n\r\nA special classroom moment:\r\nOne day, we were reading a nonfiction text about animal adaptations, and one student stopped mid-sentence and said, \"Wait—I know how to sound this out!\" She grabbed the decoding card that covered vowel teams and decoded the word camouflage all on her own. Her classmates clapped, and she was beaming.
