In advanced English, we often have writing prompts that build writing stamina and reading fluidity. Binders and notebooks are used to organize student work. Students use the binders to create a portfolio of their efforts. The notebooks are used for note taking and homework assignments. It's all a way to function for the semester with success. The characters are from present-day Lagos, Nigeria who find themselves at a crossroads clashing with Western influence. Spanning from Lagos to the United Kingdom, and to places in the United States, the main characters Ifemelu and Obinzie find themselves falling in and out of love trying to navigate what it means to be part of a global society. Skills and lessons that the students will be learning are literacy skills with Socratic Seminars that allow for discussion and debate; and literature circles that allow students to discuss and create questions for their own learning. \r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading looks like annotating and applying important themes through notetaking. James Baldwin's language and forceful, stark and passionate prose really makes us think about how we might treat ourselves, and treat others either with compassion or with animosity. What better text than \"Giovanni's Room\" to make this happen? Also, its themes on gender, race and sexuality are more relevant than ever because so many young adults now are often searching for stories that might mirror themselves. That is the true power of using literature as a way to elicit social justice in our everyday lives. The students are excited to delve into themes such as coming of age in New York City, and slam poetry as an art form. Skills and lessons that are introduced are how to find the main idea of a story, and then the identification and use of literary devices such as metaphors, imagery, and characterization are all excellent ways to master test taking skills. \r\n\r\nReading in our classroom can be one of two things: a quiet, individual activity; or paired shared and read alouds that get students sharing their thoughts about the books they read. They often write down their noticings and wonderings in their notebooks. \r\n\r\nThere are particular students who love the book more than others because those kids can see themselves in the protagonist's situation at home.
