As we learned new skills, students had the opportunity to test their knowledge and apply what they learned through centers. Students took part in completing math and reading centers throughout the week. Students were seen being engaged, and able to collaborate with their peers to problem-solve together. It was also easier for me to see who needed additional practice on a skill, based on student performance. \r\n\r\nSome of the centers we have used for reading so far, are, \"animal matching\" where students would match 2 parts of an animal based on the uppercase and lowercase letter. Students were able to apply their knowledge of uppercase/lowercase letters in a fun way. We expanded our knowledge through the \"alphabet mat\" where students would think of the picture - and the first sound in the word - and place the matching letter. They were challenged to complete both sides of the board. Now, as we have finished learning all letters, students have moved on to \"letter tubs\" where they are given 3-4 tubs of different letters, they empty the contents and take turns sorting them based on the beginning sound. This has also reinforced them to be respectful and take turns. \r\n\r\nIn math, we have been practicing with numbers 1-10 and students have been working on number puzzles, where they match a given number to a card with that quantity. At this time of year, they are now challenged to work with cards, numbered 11-20. They are able to practice counting and building number sense. Lastly, students have very much enjoyed working on the \"ice cream scoops\" center, where they are given ice cream cones, labeled with different numbers 1-10, and take turns adding scoops to represent that number. \r\n\r\nThese centers have motivated students to apply their knowledge in a fun way and they look most forward to center time! \r\nThank you for making this possible - know you've made an impact on young minds.","fullyFundedDate":1726664998252,"projectUrl":"project/engaging-math-phonics-centers/8665231/","projectTitle":"Engaging Math & Phonics Centers","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Pidel","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7510490_orig.png?crop=341,341,x0,y3&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1693437984148","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7510490"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_107299","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":376,"numTeachers":31,"percentFrplEligible":78,"percentAsian":30,"percentBlack":4,"percentWhite":5,"percentIndigenous":3,"percentLatinx":51,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"12.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":63.6,"schoolId":107299,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Queens Explorers Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Queens Explorers Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/new-york-city-dept-of-ed/queens-explorer-elementary-school-q27-ps316/107299"}
