For students with multiple disabilities, technology is more than a luxury—it is a bridge to the world. Before this project, our iPads often sat unused due to dead batteries, tangled wires, or the overwhelming sensory noise of a busy classroom. Today, those barriers have been dismantled.\r\nThe Immediate Impact: Reliability and Access\r\nThe arrival of the 8-port charging stations and MFi-certified fast chargers has created a \"power hub\" that ensures learning never has to pause. In a transition center where we focus on grades 9-12, consistency is key. Students no longer face the frustration of a device dying in the middle of a functional literacy lesson.\r\nThe bulk headphones have been a game-changer for individualized instruction. Our students can now engage with text-to-speech software and auditory directions without distraction, allowing them to focus on:\r\n•\tNavigating digital signs and maps.\r\n•\tPracticing money management modules.\r\n•\tDeveloping the communication skills necessary for post-secondary life.\r\nA Lasting Legacy for Families\r\nThis project has extended its reach far beyond the classroom walls. With reliable technology, we have been able to:\r\n1.\tDemonstrate Progress: Show parents exactly how their children use iPads to bridge literacy gaps.\r\n2.\tModel Support: Use the organized setup to teach families how to create a \"learning corner\" at home.\r\n3.\tEmpower Advocacy: When parents see their children successfully navigating a device with the right tools, their expectations shift from \"what they can't do\" to \"what they can achieve.\"\r\nImpact by the Numbers\r\nResource\tDirect Student Benefit\r\n34 Students\tGained daily access to charged, functional learning tools.\r\n32 Headphones\tEnabled private, focused auditory learning for the entire cohort.\r\n10+ Charging Points\tEliminated downtime caused by uncharged equipment.\r\n100% Equity\tProvided high-quality tech accessories to students from low-income households.\r\nExport to Sheets\r\n \r\nYour contribution didn't just buy cables and stands; it bought time, confidence, and opportunity. You have provided the \"missing pieces\" that allow our students to prove that their disabilities do not define their potential.\r\nThank you for seeing the brilliance in our Brooklyn students and for investing in their journey toward an independent future.\r\nWith gratitude,\r\nMs. Tamila PS 373K Brooklyn Transition Center","fullyFundedDate":1743172686370,"projectUrl":"project/unlocking-potential-functional-literacy/9203800/","projectTitle":"Unlocking Potential: Functional Literacy & Tech for Students with Disabilities!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Tamila","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9846457_orig.jpg?crop=2400,2400,x0,y184&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1732333636770","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9846457"},{"teacherId":9846457,"projectId":8963946,"letterContent":"Because of your generosity, our classroom has transformed into a space that is not only cleaner and healthier, but more dynamic, accessible, and empowering for my students. For students with significant disabilities—many of whom are nonverbal and rely heavily on visual and sensory input—the right tools are not luxuries. They are access points to learning.\r\nThe document camera has been especially powerful. Instead of simply listening to instructions, my students now see materials enlarged in real time—letters being formed, math manipulatives being modeled, books being read with visuals clearly projected. For visual learners, this makes abstract concepts concrete. I've seen increased attention span during literacy lessons and more independent participation during hands-on science activities. One of my quieter students, who typically disengages during whole-group instruction, now leans forward and tracks the projection carefully, pointing and responding when prompted. The technology has given him an entry point.\r\nThe printer has allowed me to design highly individualized materials—adapted reading passages, enlarged visuals, communication boards, and structured task cards aligned with each student's IEP goals. Personalization matters deeply in special education. When students see materials tailored specifically for them, their confidence increases. They recognize themselves as capable learners.\r\nThe sensory floor tiles have also become a favorite resource. Transitions can be challenging for my students, and the calming sensory stimulation helps regulate their bodies before returning to academic tasks. I've observed fewer dysregulated behaviors and smoother transitions between rotations. What may look like a simple resource is, in practice, a powerful self-regulation tool.\r\nFinally, the cleaning supplies have had a meaningful impact. Some of my students have health sensitivities, and maintaining a dust-free, sanitized environment is essential. A clean classroom is not just about appearance—it directly supports attendance, comfort, and focus. My students deserve a safe space where their health is protected and their dignity is respected.\r\nThis project has done more than supply materials. It has strengthened access, engagement, and equity in a historically underfunded setting. Because of you, my students are not only learning—they are thriving in a classroom designed intentionally for their needs.\r\nThank you for believing in them.","fullyFundedDate":1732571808135,"projectUrl":"project/clean-create-thrive-empowering-speci/8963946/","projectTitle":"\"Clean, Create, Thrive: Empowering Special Education Students!\"","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Tamila","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9846457_orig.jpg?crop=2400,2400,x0,y184&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1732333636770","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9846457"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_814","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":418,"numTeachers":62,"percentFrplEligible":93,"percentAsian":3,"percentBlack":57,"percentWhite":5,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":32,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Not specified","studentTeacherRatio":"6.7:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":67.9,"schoolId":814,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about PS 373K Brooklyn Transition Center on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"PS 373K Brooklyn Transition Center","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/new-york-city-dept-of-ed/ps-373k-bklyn-transition-ctr/814"}
