The sensory materials received such as Play-Doh, Kinetic Sand, magnetic puzzles, and dry erase markers have helped me provide my students with opportunities to engage in sensory-rich activities that enhance regulation, stimulate visual and tactile perception, aid in developing fine-motor skills and encourage communication during a regulating and preferred context. The open-ended play and pretend play materials such as playground block set, figurines, and Mr. Potato Head have created endless opportunities for my students to spontaneously use language for the functions of requesting, commenting, sharing joy/attention, seeking assistance, and collaborating with peers. \r\n\r\nI would like to share the story of one student in particular, who demonstrated increased social engagement while interacting with the received Mr. Potato head sets. For one of the first times since working with this student, I heard him laugh, share moments of eye gaze with a peer and spontaneously initiate communication with a peer by giving his peer pieces of the set and using language such as \"Here! Play with it!\" \r\n\r\nI truly believe that joy and connection are the foundation of communication and learning. Thank you for helping me create these opportunities!
