The whistles make it easier to keep drills moving and help everyone learn to react quickly, like in real game situations. The towels and foam rollers have become part of our regular warm-up and cool-down, and they've taught us how important it is to stay hydrated and take care of our bodies. One moment that stood out was after a tough conditioning practice when everyone stayed after to use the foam rollers together and talk about how it helps us feel better and play stronger the next day. It felt cool using equipment we usually only see at higher levels.\r\n\r\nWhen we first got the materials, everyone was excited right away. It meant a lot knowing that people believed in us enough to support our team. A few teammates even said it made practice feel more serious and made us want to work harder. Moving forward, we're using this equipment as we keep preparing for games and setting goals as a team. We're also starting to take more responsibility by leading warm-ups and cool-downs ourselves, which is helping us grow as leaders. The support we received is making a real difference for us, both on and off the court.","fullyFundedDate":1758899272009,"projectUrl":"project/public-school-varsity-jv-basketball/9489598/","projectTitle":"Public School Varsity/ JV Basketball","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Howard","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10088393"},{"teacherId":7530475,"projectId":9489596,"letterContent":"Our students have been using the new basketballs and blocking pads every day during physical education and after-school practice. With these resources, we launched a skill-building project focused on teamwork, coordination, and safe contact drills. One memorable moment came during a defensive-footwork lesson: students rotated through stations using the blocking pads to practice proper stance and controlled physical engagement. For many, it was the first time they could experience realistic drills without fear of injury, and their confidence grew immediately.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the new equipment, their reactions were priceless. Several cheered, a few clapped, and many immediately picked up the basketballs to test the bounce and feel. The blocking pads were especially exciting—they sparked curiosity and made the students feel like \"real athletes,\" as one student proudly said.\r\n\r\nNow that we have these materials, the next step is expanding our current unit on fundamental basketball skills. Students will work in small groups to apply their learning in structured mini-games, focusing on communication, spacing, and defensive technique. The new resources allow us to run safer, more engaging drills, and students are eager to continue improving their skills and working together as a team.","fullyFundedDate":1758899316625,"projectUrl":"project/basketball-public-school-varsity-and-jv/9489596/","projectTitle":"Basketball Public School Varsity and JV","teacherDisplayName":"Coach Carrick","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7530475_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1753214591287","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7530475"},{"teacherId":7530475,"projectId":9489669,"letterContent":"The addition of basketballs, weighted basketballs, and practice pads has had a clear and positive impact on the James Monroe girls basketball team, elevating both individual skill development and overall team performance. With access to more basketballs, players can now work in smaller groups, allowing for increased repetitions during shooting, ball-handling, and passing drills. This boosts confidence, improves muscle memory, and ensures that each athlete gets more hands-on time to refine her fundamentals.\r\n\r\nWeighted basketballs have been especially valuable in strengthening players' handles and passing power. By training with heavier equipment, the athletes develop stronger wrists and forearms, which translates to quicker, more controlled dribbling and sharper, more accurate passes during games. The team has reported noticeable improvements in ball security and their ability to handle defensive pressure.\r\n\r\nPractice pads have also transformed the physicality of training sessions. Coaches can safely simulate in-game contact, helping the players finish through bumps, absorb pressure in the post, and maintain balance when driving to the rim. As a result, the team plays with greater toughness and resilience.\r\n\r\nAltogether, these tools have improved skill development, built confidence, and contributed to a stronger, more competitive James Monroe girls basketball program.","fullyFundedDate":1758908338230,"projectUrl":"project/womens-basketball-varsity-public-school/9489669/","projectTitle":"Women's Basketball Varsity Public School","teacherDisplayName":"Coach Carrick","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7530475_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1753214591287","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7530475"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_102166","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":355,"numTeachers":35,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":22,"percentWhite":1,"percentIndigenous":1,"percentLatinx":72,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"10.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":67.9,"schoolId":102166,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Metropolitan Soundview High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Metropolitan Soundview High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/new-york-city-dept-of-ed/metropolitan-soundview-high-school/102166"}
