With your generous donation, we are now able to offer hands-on learning experiences that will inspire students to connect with nature, explore sustainable solutions, and become more responsible stewards of our planet.\r\n\r\nYour contribution is not just a donation of materials; it's an investment in the future. You are helping cultivate a generation of environmentally conscious individuals who will carry forward the lessons learned in this project in their own communities.\r\n\r\nThank you once again for your thoughtful and impactful support. My students were overjoyed when they first saw the materials. They immediately gathered around me as I opened the box, questioning me about how it was utilized and what we might plant in it. The majority of people had never seen a hydroponic system and were even more interested as they began to get hands-on with the equipment. We currently have lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, watermelon, and parsley planted in our hydroponic garden. Students were astonished at the rapid growth of the lettuce and are already making predictions as to which plants will do well here. One student said with excitement, \"I can't believe we're growing watermelon in the classroom—this is so cool!\"\r\n\r\nOur first large project is a comparison of plant growth in a hydroponic system versus regular soil. Students are meticulously recording data, measuring the speed of growth, and observing how variables such as nutrients and light impact growth. It's incredible to see how engaged they are—this project has made challenging biology concepts concrete and meaningful.\r\n\r\nIn the weeks to come, we'll try out different nutrient solutions, fine-tune our growing conditions, and even get to harvest some of our crops for a class taste-test. It's not just science; it's also a learning experience in responsibility, sustainability, and problem-solving.\r\n\r\nYour charity has turned our classroom into a real laboratory, and we couldn't be more thankful. I am excited to share that we have updates since our plants have continued to grow!","fullyFundedDate":1733495195040,"projectUrl":"project/bringing-stem-to-life-with-hydroponics/8946808/","projectTitle":"\"Bringing STEM to Life with Hydroponics and Aquariums\"","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Torres","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp4797346_orig.jpg?crop=3024,3024,x0,y131&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1644339283535","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/4797346"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_5933","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":513,"numTeachers":21,"percentFrplEligible":83,"percentAsian":4,"percentBlack":68,"percentWhite":3,"percentIndigenous":2,"percentLatinx":20,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"24.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":53.7,"schoolId":5933,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about High School for Youth & Community Development on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"High School for Youth & Community Development","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/new-york-city-dept-of-ed/hs-for-youth-community-dev/5933"}
