As you saw, I teach AP Precalculus and Algebra1 at a Title 1 school in NYC. These calculators have already made a different in how my students approach mathematics.\r\n\r\nIn my AP course, the NumWorks calculators have given my students better access to doing higher level math. The functions that once felt abstract (writing sequences, creating multiple equations and solving them, modeling with mathematics) are now something that students can actually explore. The ability to graph and adjust parameters to understand the pieces of a function and watch how you can transform it has opened up my student's ability to visualize different pieces of mathematics. \r\n\r\nI'm also piloting these calculators with my Algebra 1 students. I have many students who are not on grade level which I can see are benefiting from these calculators. These calculators are not being used for answer getting, they are being used as a tool to support students who might be several grades behind. With what happened with Covid, this is very evident in my classes. The ability to solve one or two step equations is very difficult for my 9th grade students (even though this is something that is taught in 6th grade). These calculators help students bridge that gap so that they can understand the on grade level concepts. \r\n\r\nThe biggest change that I have seen is the development of students' confidence in my class. Less students shut down, and more students are trying. Like I said, the calculator is not a solution tool (even though it can be in some situations), but it provides easier and more accessible ways to do mathematics. When students realize how much more they can do, the response is always the same, \"No way!! It can do this too?!\" The moment of surprise and pride is what we are working towards every day.\r\n\r\nIt's too early to measure the impact on test scores or Regents performance, but the fact that students are already feeling more confident and engaging with on-grade-level mathematics is a big sign. In a Title I school, equity of access matters. These calculators have leveled the playing field in my classroom, and I'm so grateful to you for making that possible.\r\n\r\nThank you for believing in my students and in the power of the right tools at the right time.","fullyFundedDate":1758908345783,"projectUrl":"project/next-gen-calculators-for-a-next-level-ap/9465145/","projectTitle":"Next-Gen Calculators for a Next-Level AP Class","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. De Sousa","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9415256_orig.jpg?crop=621,621,x0,y55&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1702757661055","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/btech-numworks"},{"teacherId":9432869,"projectId":9079286,"letterContent":"On behalf of all the students and staff, I would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude for your incredible support towards making our school trip a reality. The axolotl, with its unique and fascinating appearance, serves as a living example of biological concepts that might otherwise seem abstract. Students are captivated by observing its behavior and learning about its habitat, diet, and life cycle. This hands-on experience makes lessons more tangible and memorable, fostering a deeper understanding of scientific principles.\r\n\r\nMoreover, the presence of an axolotl helps students form a connection to the environment. By caring for the axolotl, students develop a sense of responsibility and empathy towards living creatures. This experience can inspire them to think about broader environmental issues and the importance of conservation. The joy and excitement that students feel when interacting with the axolotl create a positive and dynamic learning atmosphere, making science class a highlight of their day.\r\n\r\nStudents are now taking ownership of their class pet. AP Environmental science students are designing worm farms that will serve as Bubbles' food source for the rest of the year. \r\n\r\nThis has only been made possible by generous donors like you.
