Your donation to my classroom and to the students has had such an amazing impact already! With your donation I got colored printer paper, colored index cards, desk dividers and green pens. These might seem like basic tools but they have truly transformed the way our classroom feels and functions each day.\r\n\r\nThe colored paper and index cards have brought a sense of creativity and excitement to even the simplest assignments. Seriously... students light up when they get to choose their colors and make their work their own. They've also become incredibly helpful tools for organization. As middle schoolers, they are constantly working to build and refine certain executive functioning skills, one of which being organization. The colored paper allows students to sort notes, track ideas, and keep their materials from different units neat and easy to follow. And the matching colored flashcards allow them to make corresponding study materials for each unit. It's made a noticeable difference in how confidently they approach their work and stay on top of tasks!\r\n\r\nThe desk dividers have helped create a sense of focus and personal space that allows everyone to do their best thinking, and the green pens (which have quickly become a class favorite!) have turned into amazing tools for making corrections to their work, turning the process of learning from mistakes a little more targeted and fun.\r\n\r\nBeyond the supplies themselves, your kindness has shown my students that there are people out there who believe in them and care about their success. That feeling is powerful, and it's something they carry with them far beyond the classroom.\r\n\r\nThank you for helping me create a space where students feel supported, inspired, and excited to learn. I don't love the pressure we put on students or teachers for state testing. That said, the public school system for high school admissions in NY is competitive and relies heavily on the 7th grade state test scores to create their rosters. Therefore, I have to care and try my hardest to prepare my students so that they can get into the high school of their choice, and ultimately have agency over their educational journey. And that's where your donations have come in! The colored index cards have been amazing as students create study materials for the various units we've covered. They love creating and feeling ownership over them, which encourages them to study. As for the styluses, they give students the option of using the touchscreen computers to show their work on the open response questions rather than the confusing equation builder provided on the test. This is huge because now my students will be assessed on how well they know the math and not on if they know how to represent a mixed number on a keyboard.\r\n\r\nThe second area that your contribution helped with is in creating organized systems in the classroom. See the pictures for how the colorful tape has made my laptop cart beautiful! I used to spend so much time plugging in the laptops, untangling chords, moving laptops to the right spot, etc. Now, with the difference of a tiny bit of tape, the kiddos do all that without even having to be asked. The organizer that you helped me get houses extra homework copies from recent lessons so students always know where to go to get any missing work. And the white Sharpies have made my numbered calculator system something to write home about. Seriously. These things might seem small and silly, but they dramatically reduce the amount of time I spend on trivial things so that I can focus more on the learning. They also shift responsibility to students so that they feel more responsible and accountable for their learning, which couldn't be more important at their age. \r\n\r\nThank you again for your support! It really really warmed my heart to know that others are and will look after these students and their success. They can make me crazy but they are the absolute best. They make me laugh everyday. Their creativity and perseverance is admirable. They are deserving of so much and the school system, as it is, only provides some of what they need, so your donation is everything! Many had questions about the customs, foods, and symbols, and they were eager to share stories from their own families' traditions.
