The students were so excited when I opened these boxes and they were already picking books that they wanted to read. When it comes to reading books in my classroom I give them time to read silently. When they are finished with the books the students write a short book summary that they can turn in for extra credit. The book summary focuses on what type of theme the book has and what type of evidence supports it. In this manner they are able to practice this skill with a book that they picked out themselves.
