The most popular tool is the whiteboards I have been able to hang around my classroom or stick to magnetic surfaces. These whiteboards have created a classroom environment that values collaboration, visual thinking, mathematical discourse, and learning from mistakes. The students feel more comfortable taking risks as they work together, communicate their thought process, and can try new things in erasable surfaces. My students faces always fill with excitement when they hear we are using whiteboards. My students do not really get the opportunity to work with whiteboards in other classes or get the opportunity to move around the room much, so they are excited to work with one another and have the opportunity to stand and move. \r\n\r\nA huge 7th grade standard is proportions and proportional relationships. We just finished our proportions unit and used the whiteboards very frequently. My students have gotten very familiar with this instructional strategies and know how to follow the classroom routines and procedures. In predetermine partners/groups (no bigger than 3 students), the students are encourage to work together, talk through their thought process, and solve each question. Once they finish, they should raise their hand and get their answer checked before they can move on. This prevents students from practicing the same skill incorrectly, but it also gives us as teacher to use questioning to help them identify their mistake and learn from them. Students have gotten in the habit of checking their work and providing reasoning to the steps they have taken to solve more complex problems. When students navigate word problems they will read the question out loud together, determine what the pieces of information represent in context of the situation, and work together to form a solution. As a teacher, I can gauge students understanding by the number of questions they get correct, listening to mathematical discourse, and viewing their thought process that is visually displayed on whiteboards. There has been such an increase in motivation, productivity, and engagement in my classroom due to these materials. \r\n\r\nIn 8th grade, we have been able to utilize the coordinate grid in many of our topics in a similar way. For example, transformation, dilations, graphing equations of a line, and systems of equations. The opportunity to interact with the mathematics in a visually why has really helped them comprehend what is going on. They have an easier time expressing what they are learning, shared ideas, or connections they have made. \r\n\r\nOverall, these materials have been a huge assets to my classroom. My students and I are very grateful and look forward to finding even more creative ways to implement them in my classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1764729266582,"projectUrl":"project/exploring-math-with-vertical-non-permane/9692265/","projectTitle":"Exploring Math with Vertical Non-Permanent Surfaces!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Maucione","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10245682_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1757190855432","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10245682"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_22820","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":377,"numTeachers":25,"percentFrplEligible":42,"percentAsian":14,"percentBlack":8,"percentWhite":37,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":35,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"7 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"15.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":71.4,"schoolId":22820,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about A MacArthur Barr Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"A MacArthur Barr Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/nanuet-union-free-school-district/macarthur-barr-middle-school/22820"}
