My students were so excited to see a new material be introduced. At first, they thought it was oil pastels which we have used before but after I explained how we got these and what they are, students were excited to get started.\r\n\r\nMy first graders had just learned all about space in their classrooms, so I took this opportunity to have students tell me what they learned then learn how to make their own galaxy. This material was perfect for this project because it allowed students to blend colors seamlessly and build their confidence. We started off with how to properly use the materials, then we practiced blending red, orange and yellow planets. Then we blended a blue and white, finally a pink, red and purple planet. After practicing students got to work on their final paper, I provided a reference at the front of the room so they could remember what colors to mix together, then it was all on them. Lastly, I showed students how to make a small star in their galaxy using white and yellow to make an accurate star.\r\n\r\nMy next plan is to have second grade use their materials for printmaking. They will be making collagraph collages and doing a rubbing. I thought chalk pastels would be a fun introduction into more of the fine art materials and showing them different ways of using materials.","fullyFundedDate":1735610204313,"projectUrl":"project/chalk-pastels-in-the-art-room/8923241/","projectTitle":"Chalk Pastels in the Art Room","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. R","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9643432_orig.jpg?crop=1080,1080,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1723247074709","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/art-class-with-msr"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_21282","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":222,"numTeachers":19,"percentFrplEligible":15,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":96,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":2,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 3","studentTeacherRatio":"11.7:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":66.7,"schoolId":21282,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Marilla Primary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Marilla Primary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/iroquois-central-school-district/marilla-primary-school/21282"}
