The ability to offer a variety of seating options has allowed us to create a space where students are more engaged, more comfortable, and more in control of their own learning experience.\r\nFlexible seating has transformed how students interact with their classroom space. By allowing them to choose where and how they sit—whether on the floor, at a standing desk, or in groupings—they are empowered to learn in the way that best supports their individual needs. For students who struggle to sit still for long periods, flexible seating offers the ability to incorporate movement throughout the day. This freedom helps them to remain focused and engaged in the lesson, rather than feeling confined by traditional seating arrangements.\r\nIn addition to the physical benefits, the social and collaborative opportunities have been profound. Students are more willing to participate and collaborate with their peers when they have the freedom to work together in various spaces within the room. Whether it's gathering in small groups on the floor or working at a communal table, students are developing key social skills like communication, teamwork, and respect for others' space and ideas.\r\nAnother important aspect is how flexible seating has encouraged the development of personal skills, particularly in self-regulation and problem-solving. Students are learning how to make thoughtful decisions about where to sit based on their needs for focus, comfort, and collaboration. When conflicts arise—such as students wanting the same seating options—they are given opportunities to practice problem-solving and compromise. This contributes to their overall emotional and social growth, as they become more responsible for managing their own choices.\r\nPerhaps most importantly, students are eager to come into the classroom each day. The excitement surrounding the new seating arrangements is palpable, and the energy it creates enhances the overall learning atmosphere. The classroom no longer feels like a place where students are confined to their desks, but rather a dynamic space where they are free to engage, collaborate, and grow.\r\nIn conclusion, flexible seating has had a tremendous positive impact on our classroom environment. It has fostered greater engagement, collaboration, and personal growth among students, all while enhancing their overall learning experience. We are excited to continue using this approach to help students thrive in an environment that supports their diverse needs.","fullyFundedDate":1733235491171,"projectUrl":"project/flexible-seating-for-an-engaged-classro/8686478/","projectTitle":"Flexible Seating for an Engaged Classroom!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Gordon-Fink","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9515958"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_23520","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":442,"numTeachers":35,"percentFrplEligible":59,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":91,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":4,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"3 - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"12.6:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":92.7,"schoolId":23520,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Homer Intermediate School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Homer Intermediate School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/homer-central-school-district/homer-intermediate-school/23520"}
