My students used the picture books to learn about being a good citizen, being honest, and showing kindness. One of my favorite moments was during a small‑group lesson when my verbal students played one of the cooperative board games from this project. As they took turns, they practiced conversational skills like asking questions, commenting, and problem‑solving together—skills that are very difficult for them to generalize outside structured activities. Meanwhile, my students in the 6:1:1 class used the emotion puzzles and community‑helper toys to identify feelings and match people in the community to their roles, the tools they use and the places they work at. These hands‑on tools helped them understand abstract concepts in a developmentally appropriate and engaging way.\r\n\r\n\r\n Students' reactions were priceless. Students in the 6:1:1 classrooms were immediately drawn to the bright visuals on the puzzles and emotion toys—several began exploring them independently before I even introduced the activity. Students in the 8:1:1 rooms were excited to look through the new books both independently and during read alouds. The dress‑up materials for community helpers were an instant hit; students began role‑playing \"firefighter,\" \"nurse,\" and \"mail carrier\" within minutes. Even my quieter English learners showed increased engagement and curiosity simply because the materials felt inviting and accessible.\r\n\r\n\r\n Our next steps are to extend the learning from these materials into expressive language tasks and real‑world connections. In the 8:1:1 classrooms, students will continue building vocabulary by using the community‑helper costumes and props to act out short scenarios, describe responsibilities, and learn synonyms for different feelings. In the 6:1:1 classes, we will use the emotion toys and puzzles as part of morning check‑ins to help students communicate how they feel using words, visuals, or gestures. Across both buildings, we will continue reinforcing citizenship skills—such as honesty, cooperation, and kindness—through read‑alouds and gameplay. These materials will remain a core part of how my English learners with autism access and understand social‑emotional and community‑based concepts.","fullyFundedDate":1765401685868,"projectUrl":"project/civics-for-young-english-learners-with-a/9839562/","projectTitle":"Civics for young English Learners with ASD","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. S.","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-2_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9777003"},{"teacherId":9714163,"projectId":9337730,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for supporting our program. As a new school, we started with nothing and your donation has helped us grow. We now have items that will help our students regulate themselves, store our materials, and new musical instruments! Before we received the bins, our instruments were everywhere! Now, students know to put materials away and it helps them set routines for clean up and set up.\r\n Students in a special education setting need different materials to help them learn. Our students strive when they have sensory items and physical items to touch. The sensory strips have helped to calm students down when they are in crisis. They love having them on their folders and on the desks to help them when needed. Many of our students also need visuals. The colorful timer has helped the students see how much time they have left. They struggle telling time so this has been a great addition. They also all love the posters. They were very excited to see them in the room! \r\n My students love the hand drums and the scarves. The drums help them hit something other than the desk (which they were doing before). They know can play on actual instruments! Also, the scarves help them visualize movements that they struggled with before. They can move the scarf up, down, side to side, and around in circles. It really helped in our high and low unit.","fullyFundedDate":1752586476250,"projectUrl":"project/do-re-mi-fa-sol-excited-for-music/9337730/","projectTitle":"Do Re Mi Fa Sol Excited for Music","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Peknic","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9714163_orig.jpg?crop=700,700,x412,y470&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1733925048247","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9714163"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_132676","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":null,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":89,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":23,"percentWhite":1,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":73,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"US Census Data for the surrounding geographic area","gradesServed":"Not specified","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"Census ZCTA","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"UNCLASSIFIED","ncesMetroType":null},"inStateSupporters":79.3,"schoolId":132676,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about PS X643 on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"PS X643","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/district-75-city-wide-programs/ps-x643/132676"}
