Friday has quickly become one of the most exciting parts of our week because students get to visit the store and make their own choices about how to spend their hard-earned tickets.\r\n\r\nThe materials from this project have made such a difference in our classroom. The rolling cart and storage containers have helped me create an organized, inviting store, while the individual ticket containers allow students to save and keep track of their earnings. The variety of prizes means that every student can find something that motivates and excites them. We are also using our stuffed animals as special book buddies, which has made reading time even more enjoyable for my second graders. It has been so fun to see students proudly choose a book buddy and settle in with a book!\r\n\r\nMost importantly, this project has helped create a classroom environment where students recognize that their effort, kindness, and hard work are worth celebrating. They are learning that they can set a goal, work toward it, save for something they really want, and feel proud when they accomplish it. I was especially excited about the new clear book ends. Our old metal book ends were large, heavy, and blocked the covers of the books at the end of each shelf. The clear book ends are much less distracting and allow students to see the cover of the last book. It is a small change, but it makes our shelves look so much cleaner and makes it easier for students to see all their choices. I am already looking forward to adding more clear book ends throughout the library! I plan on having my fifth graders assist me with this project this week.\r\n\r\nHaving these materials available also allows me to spend less time worrying about whether we have the supplies we need and more time focusing on what students are learning and creating. Some of the books are available for students to discover and enjoy independently, while I keep some of the books with heavier topics in my office so that I can use them more intentionally. This allows me to work with our school counselors and families when a student is experiencing something specific and a book might provide a helpful way to begin a conversation or give a child and trusted adult something to explore together. \r\n\r\nThese books have expanded what I am able to offer my students beyond traditional library lessons. Sometimes a child needs a story about friendship or perseverance, but sometimes they need a book that helps them understand something much bigger or more complicated. Having these resources available means I can recommend a book when the right moment arises, rather than having to search for one. I am grateful to everyone who helped make this project possible because these books are giving our students another way to understand themselves, understand others, and approach more difficult subjects with curiosity and openness. The book character plushies have been an especially big hit. Students love seeing familiar characters come to life, and the plushies often become an instant favorite during library time. Whenever there is a lull during book checkout, I remind students of the choose your own adventure books and the reaction is immediate—students start getting excited, flipping through the choices, and eagerly look for a book they want to try.\r\n\r\nWe only started checking out books last week and already my bins of these books are either completely empty or nearly empty! It has been wonderful to see students so eager to grab a book and start reading. I am especially excited to see students recommend their favorites to one another and talk about the different paths and endings they discovered.
