It is difficult for many to express their feelings in a constructive manner. Instead there is usually yelling, crying, shutting down or sometimes physical aggression. \r\nThe students I work with range in age from 13 to 19-years old. Being a teenager is rough. That is when we learn who we are in this world and how to manage our way through it. \r\nOne of the most important responsibilities I have as their teacher is helping them navigate through their emotions, both positive and negative. Telling someone that they need to \"let it go\" or \"stop thinking about that\" just doesn't work. In fact, it can make them feel worse about themselves or the situation. It is imperative that the students learn healthy constructive ways to deal with life's disappointments as well as accomplishments. \r\nMany students with mental health issues have an extremely difficult time dealing with disappointments. This includes with themselves, others and situations. They can resort to self harm, both physically and emotionally, aggression towards others, as well as loss of control of themselves. Many children learn self regulation when they are young. However, some do not. Watching a teenager throw a full blown temper tantrum is very disheartening for both the observers and the student themselves. This is due to a lack of coping skills. \r\nMany times, being creative or finishing something gives the students a positive sense of accomplishment. Coloring a picture, or making a simple origami craft can turn a negative feeling into a positive or more neutral feeling. \r\nAt first when I offered students coloring books and colored pencils, they said no. They felt as though coloring was for babies. I stared to color a few and placed them around the room. The positive messages put a smile on a few faces. I was able to offer the pictures to students as a reminder of how awesome they are. Once this started many students asked for them. This became my segue to have them color some of the pages. Many students decided that it wasn't necessarily for \"babies\". \r\nI also pulled out the origami books. I had a few students who were familiar with it and showed interest in making some pretty cool objects. There were a few incidents where frustration came in, but that was a great time to bring in a few of the tools they have when frustrated. Many either left it for a while or asked for help from another person. Seeing the growth in this skill has been inspiring. \r\nI have been able to observe that many students like to color or attempt a more challenging origami craft when they are feeling positive about themselves. They quickly have a sense of achievement and are proud to show it off. Students who are struggling with their emotions, tend to color or try the basic origami. Once it has been completed, time has gone by and they are emotionally more positive about both themselves and the situation. \r\nHaving the opportunity to have these options available for the students throughout the day is amazing. \r\nThe impact your donations have made on the students that I teach, as well as those in the building who I don't teach, has been nothing short of incredible. Many students seek out these activities to help self regulate. This is one of many skills that they now have in their arsenal to be successful in the world. \r\nThank you for all you do for the next generation of involved, successful, productive citizens.","fullyFundedDate":1730567740405,"projectUrl":"project/stress-management-through-crafts/8913178/","projectTitle":"Stress Management Through Crafts","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Beals","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9821799"},{"teacherId":7560396,"projectId":8914687,"letterContent":"We are using our products in our classroom to help support social emotional learning.
