From the very first chapter, they connected with the story and eagerly anticipated our daily reading time—often cheering \"Yes!\" when the books were passed out. This enthusiasm translated into meaningful learning experiences that touched every modality of learning.\r\n\r\nThrough reading for comprehension and character analysis, students developed a deeper understanding of literary elements and empathy for the characters, particularly Opal. We expanded our learning across content areas—creating art projects inspired by the \"Mistake Tree,\" applying social studies skills by drawing maps of Naomi, Florida, and writing letters to Opal's mom to strengthen communication and perspective-taking. Students also designed party invitations and lost dog posters, blending creativity with writing and design skills.\r\n\r\nThe combination of whole-group reading and small-group or individual projects allowed every student to participate meaningfully, regardless of their learning style. Visual learners thrived through art and mapping activities, auditory learners engaged during read-aloud discussions, and kinesthetic learners expressed understanding through hands-on creations.\r\n\r\nOverall, this project not only enhanced literacy and cross-curricular skills but also fostered excitement, collaboration, and a genuine love for reading.
