I quickly was able to get donations from donors like you! My school was pleased because my class runs on a very limited budget. We are a small class but with school budgets tightening down, we must think twice before ordering materials. \r\nThe Martian arrived the first week of school and my class quickly got to work. I produced weekly questions for my students to complete (to ensure they were reading) and a bigger project due at the end of the book. Some students are doing character analysis going deeper by applying what they learned in their psychology class to truly analyze the psychological impact of being the only person on Mars. My artists are illustrating the book. My gifted math students are looking into all the calculations in the book. My writers are creating a newspaper with up to date articles as we read the book. There are still working hard on these projects, but I have included one image that I have received so far.\r\nWhile reading the book, we have had debates over some of the issues that have arisen with the characters. They love to debate and look for topics from the book to argue over. We recently viewed an interview of Andy Weir and how he created this novel. It was very entertaining and again led to class discussion. I have students interested in becoming writers and so we discussed Andy Weir starting out as self-published and then moved on to the issues of AI in the publishing world.\r\nMy favorite note for thanks - one of my students who has expressed a great disgust for novels since 6th grade wanted to say thanks. He is a senior in high school and I have finally found a book he likes. When he found out we were reading a novel this semester he almost dropped the class. He stuck it out loudly expressing his disdain for this project then started reading. After 2 weeks he said that he could not believe he was going to admit this, but this is the first book he liked.\r\nThis was my first time using Donors Choose and I was shocked at how easy it was. I am presenting at the NM Gifted Conference at the end of October. My presentation is teaching a small, gifted seminar class on a budget. A topic that is an issue across New Mexico. I will be thanking this program specifically for making it so easy to get materials for my class.\r\nSo, thank you for your generosity and making my job a step easier. I will soon be planning for spring semester and probably needing to order more materials for my class.","fullyFundedDate":1746971515836,"projectUrl":"project/martians-in-the-classroom/9328665/","projectTitle":"Martians in the Classroom","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Knight","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10022786"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_70808","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":143,"numTeachers":11,"percentFrplEligible":60,"percentAsian":2,"percentBlack":3,"percentWhite":53,"percentIndigenous":9,"percentLatinx":30,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"13.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":50.0,"schoolId":70808,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about NorthPoint Charter School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"NorthPoint Charter School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-mexico/new-mexico-department-of-education/southwest-secondary-learning-ctr/70808"}
