We kicked off the school year with titles like *The Name Jar*, using them to build an inclusive community where students learn to honor their own names, pronounce each other's names correctly, and take pride in their identities and cultural heritage.\r\n\r\nThrough these texts, students are mastering critical literacy skills early on:\r\n\r\n* Literary Analysis:** Examining character development, central themes of identity and belonging, and visual storytelling techniques.\r\n* Empathy & Reflection:** Connecting personal experiences to narrative arcs and engaging in respectful dialogue about diverse perspectives.\r\n* Vocabulary Expansion:** Unlocking context clues and discussing key vocabulary embedded within rich, multi-layered stories.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading is an interactive, shared experience. We move between whole-class read-alouds, small-group discussions, and independent reflection time. Students don't just sit and read passively—they annotate, collaborate on group charts, and share connection stories with their peers.\r\n\r\nThese new books have been especially impactful for our quieter students and those who previously felt hesitant about sharing their backgrounds. Seeing stories that mirror their own experiences has sparked immediate engagement, giving them the confidence to speak up during class discussions and take pride in who they are. Your support has given our students both a mirror to see themselves and a window to understand others, setting a positive tone for the entire school year!","fullyFundedDate":1779293873738,"projectUrl":"project/new-books-new-worlds/10265959/","projectTitle":"New Books, New Worlds","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Maestas","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5337875_orig.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1778297139202","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/ms-maestas"},{"teacherId":9993658,"projectId":10261637,"letterContent":"Thank you for your generous donation for my students. This transition has been so fulfilling, to say the least. \r\nIn our Donor's Choose order, we received magnetic alphabet tiles which have helped my non-verbal students tremendously. They love forming words with them and playing with the magnets on them. The water bottles have also given them the opportunity to be responsible for \"housekeeping\" and washing dishes during the week so they are able to practice their functional living skills. \r\nEvery item we received from our project, has impacted or will impact our classroom greatly.
