Through this text, students learn to analyze systemic issues such as resource inequality, oppression, and rebellion while also building skills in critical thinking, ethical reasoning, and solution-based problem solving. They're not just reading for plot; they're learning to read as historians, sociologists, and peacemakers, asking, Why did this conflict start? What sustained it? And how might it be resolved in a just and lasting way?\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is dynamic and purposeful. Students engage in close reading, collaborative discussions, and evidence-based analysis. They annotate passages, debate ideas in small groups, and connect the fictional world of Panem to current global issues. Reading becomes an interactive dialogue between the student and the text, between peers, and between fiction and real-world application. \r\n\r\nStudents who are typically more interested in social justice or current events have found The Hunger Games incredibly engaging. One student who often struggles with traditional literature became highly engaged during a class discussion about systemic inequality in Panem, drawing parallels to real-life issues they've seen in their community. These books give all students, especially those who may not always feel seen, a platform to express their voice, explore complex ideas, and envision meaningful change.\r\nThank you for giving students the opportunity to connect fictional worlds to real-world problems and understand how to address issues that may arise in their own lives. They are learning valuable life lessons that they can carry with them through their adult lives.","fullyFundedDate":1744218408647,"projectUrl":"project/the-hunger-games-project/9215181/","projectTitle":"The Hunger Games Project","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Peel","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9985893_orig.png?crop=966,966,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1743279305417","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9985893"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_61078","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":455,"numTeachers":34,"percentFrplEligible":65,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":17,"percentIndigenous":32,"percentLatinx":43,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"13.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":33.3,"schoolId":61078,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Mesa View Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Mesa View Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-mexico/farmington-municipal-school-district-5/mesa-view-middle-school/61078"}
