I am excited to share how much joy, curiosity, and meaningful learning your gift has sparked, especially through our work with Drawing Dissent: Power, Propaganda, and Rebellion in 1984, the graphic novel adaptation of George Orwell's 1984.\r\n\r\nMy students had an incredible amount of fun reading this text and completing the accompanying projects. Many of them were immediately drawn to the visual format, and the graphic novel made Orwell's complex ideas more accessible and engaging. Students frequently commented that interacting with the story through images and words helped them better understand the plot, characters, and themes, and made reading feel less intimidating and more enjoyable.\r\n\r\nThrough this unit, students developed important academic skills. They compared and contrasted the Big Brother government with our own society, analyzed how power and propaganda operate, and examined how surveillance and control affect individuals. Because the story was told visually, students also explored symbolism, mood, tone, and structure in new ways by paying close attention to color, framing, facial expressions, and layout to interpret meaning. They learned firsthand how a story can shift when it is told through images as well as words.\r\n\r\nReading in my classroom during this unit was active and collaborative. Students discussed panels in small groups, debated connections to modern media and government, annotated visuals alongside text, and shared creative and analytical projects with one another. Even students who are typically hesitant readers were eager to participate, contribute ideas, and dive deeper into the story. Several students told me this was the most enjoyable reading project they had completed all year.\r\n\r\nBecause of your support, students are not only engaging in rich literary and rhetorical analysis, but also building critical visual literacy skills they will carry far beyond our classroom. Your gift helped transform a challenging classic into an experience that was meaningful, fun, and empowering.\r\n\r\nThank you for helping make reading an engaging and impactful experience for my students. Your generosity truly makes a difference.","fullyFundedDate":1754415567571,"projectUrl":"project/drawing-dissent-power-propaganda-and/9470940/","projectTitle":"Drawing Dissent: Power, Propaganda, and Rebellion in 1984","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Maes","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10082081_orig.jpg?crop=2316,2316,x0,y216&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1752706771171","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10082081"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_70805","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":449,"numTeachers":28,"percentFrplEligible":42,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":2,"percentWhite":39,"percentIndigenous":1,"percentLatinx":54,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"16.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":75.9,"schoolId":70805,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Public Academy Performing Arts on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Public Academy Performing Arts","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-mexico/albuquerque-public-schools/public-academy-performing-arts/70805"}
