Our library was lacking in books about diverse cultures. This was a great way to expose students to other traditions and bring inclusivity to our room.\r\n\r\nFor May, we have been learning about Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Month. These books were used for many readings during our morning meeting and end of day story time. It complimented our unit all month long.\r\n\r\nAt the end of the month, we read Hiromi's Hands by Lynne Barasch. Then we used some of the cooking materials to make sushi. It wasn't a complete success but we had so much with the process. Trying to eat food with chopsticks was the best part! We discussed the Japanese traditions and food in the book. Then we ate food and used tools as it was described in the book. I know this lesson will forever be a core memory with my students.
