I reminded them that something they'd asked for was more instruction on instruments they are actually interested in playing, like the guitar. They remembered this instantly. I then told them about Donors Choose, and how I thought it would be unreasonable to ask for 30 guitars, but attainable to ask for 30 ukuleles, they knew where I was going with the story and could not wait to get their hands on them. \r\n\r\n I didn't make it easy. They did the unboxing themselves, which got us talking about the construction of the instruments and the science of why making the string tighter brings the pitch up. I also had them tune the instruments out of the box - without a tuner. They had to constantly compare my singing of a pitch to their instruments and make comparisons, adjusting until it was perfect. The extreme listening skills and ear training was on full display and with the gratification of a working instrument that they made work. \r\n\r\n And we're still at the beginning! Next comes the history of the instrument, the surprising cultural facts, and learning to read chords and tablature. They'll benefit musically for the next marking period or so, but they will also be gifted the chance to pick up something they can take with them for the rest of their lives, either to enjoy alone or with others, continuing a tradition that is part of our very humanity.","fullyFundedDate":1723670999880,"projectUrl":"project/ukulele-an-accessible-and-advocated-fo/8474603/","projectTitle":"Ukulele - An Accessible and Advocated-for Challenge","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Gibbins","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp3620808_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1464191656468","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3620808"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_45678","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":466,"numTeachers":29,"percentFrplEligible":27,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":5,"percentWhite":75,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":12,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"3 - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"16.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":85.3,"schoolId":45678,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Waterford Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Waterford Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-jersey/waterford-township-school-district/waterford-elementary-school/45678"}
